As a college coach, everything bigtrain said in regards to the rules is correct. In addition, you are seeing a lot of early committments lately. Many schools have already received verbals for numerous 2008 HS grads. It depends on the schools needs and how badly they want to lock someone up, even though verbals are not binding.

As for "My kid pitches" original question, either an official or unofficial visit can be over night, but the only time a school can pay for you to stay over night is on the official.

In terms of the recruiting of 12U teams, bigtrain, your team must be really good!!! I can't wait to see them play!!! But he is right, many DI schools will focus on recruiting 16U teams when it comes to finding new players, and will go to 18U games to watch players they already know about. The simple reason for that is many players on 18U teams have already committed or signed with schools, much fewer have done so at 16U (although there are some that have).

If the trend continues, perhaps 14U will become the hotbed for recruiting in the coming years.
