Confidence is a reflection of inner subconscious beliefs, feelings, and self-talk. If the thoughts, images, beliefs, and self-talk are non-productive, meaning doubtful or fearful, your focus and body will react in a non-productive way. The goal is to help your athletes feel confident and powerful when they are on the mound, up to bat, or have to make a play when the game is on the line. In order to do that they need to be relaxed, focused on the task, let their muscles go, and trust the action. These are skills that need to be practiced.
Teaching your kids to play one pitch at a time is important and there is more to it then saying "focus" or "be confident".
Tom Hanson, author of Play Big, keeps it simple by using what he calls his A, B, C's. Use the ABC on each and every pitch.
Act big
Breathe big
Commit big
Mike Candrea and Jeff Janssen taught Scan, Plan, Do on each pitch.
Brian Cain teaches WIN. Focus on what's important now.
Encourage your kids to develop a routine where they check in to see if they are in the right mental state which is clear minded, relaxed, empowered, focused, and trusting.
Incorporate positive key cue words and self-talk into the routine to keep the mind focused on one thing, see the ball, rip the ball or hit the glove. There is a sequence to the routine that can be helpful.
Dr Michael Gervais, who works with the Seattle Seahawks and other famous super stars, says these athletes are in a league of their own because they train 3 things.
1. Their body - strength, quickness, power, agility, flexibility, reaction time
2. The skills needed for their sport - hitting, pitching, throwing, fielding
3. Their mind - taking control of their thoughts, emotional states, being mindful, and staying in a zone that allows them to be successful
Most teams and individuals are doing 1 and 2 but how many know how to do 3 or are practicing 3?
Aspire Higher Sports/Softball can help you and your athletes have a better understanding of strategies that can help win the mind game.
Mind strategies are like anything else, they need to be practiced in practice and in games. I work with teams of all ages and can travel to your site. I do fun and interactive seminars that last anywhere from 1 hour to 4 hours. Within the last week I have done sessions with Ohio Classics 02, Wolfpack 16U, Thunder Elite, and am scheduled to work with Ohio Express and the Stingrays organization on Mental Training and Team Building in the near future.
This is a great way to add variety to your winter workouts! I am scheduling now for October, November, December, and January! These sessions are helpful for every level, teams playing high level travel and new teams just starting out. I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with some of the athletes on the national championship Laser's Purple and Green teams before they won their titles. Mental training is the difference maker.
