I thought this might be fun for you coaches and wanna be coaches. ;D ;D

Seems like we are always talking about making up a good lineup. ?What would be your lineup for the following players and why?

Players are A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J, K (10 players) and the descriptions are relative to the other players.

A - next to last in average, near the bottom in slugging, walks more than average, average speed at best, not a good bunter

B - second best average, good slugging %, rarely walks, strikes out more than average, decent on base %, average speed

C - very fast runner, middle of the team in average, middle in slugging, doesn't strike out much, good bunter

D - lower part of the team in average and slugging, walks a lot, lots of power, average speed

E - lower batting average, bottom in slugging, rarely walks, decent bunter, rarely strikes out, good speed

F - best average, best in slugging, best OB%, walks more than average, average speed

G - good average, good slugging, walks more than average, second in on base %, tremendous power, slower runner

H - excellent average and bunter, above average speed, good on base %, above average power

J - excellent average and bunter, average speed, average slugging %

K - outstanding speed, low average, good slugging %, rarely strikes out

I'll take a stab...

1. ?H.
2. ?J
3. ?F
4. ?G
5. ?B
6. ?C
7. ?D
8. ?A
9. ?E

Heck, I missed that there were 10 players there. ?Let me take another look at things as I missed player K. I'd probably just put K in for E in the 9 hole. I would like to have more info on many of the players, though.

I was torn on a couple of them.

First 6 explain themselves.
7 Didn't get OB% so this might be an out.
8.Can move 7 if not an out.
9. Still gets on base.
10.Keep for injured player replacement.

You did say 10!!!!

Purple Jack, I took your test this morning on scrap paper without regards to what Joe and Gary had posted earlier and was suprised that me and Joe's first 4 were the same! As anyone can tell you, I really don't care much for Joe, so I certainly wouldn't edit mine to match...lol.

1) H
2) J
3) F
4) G
5) C
6) B
7) E
8) D
9) K

10) A (sub) :)

for E above: OB% < .300

Of course there is no right or wrong answer which is what makes this interesting to discuss. ;)

My first choice lineup would be:

1. C [speed, doesn't strike out, I like speed on the bases early. I could also live with H here, but I like her above average power behind some base runners]

2. H [great batter has to be near the top of the lineup, and I might also put J here as well]

3. F [best hitter on the team has to bat in the first inning in my book. Average and slugging is clear; above average walks says she also has a good judgement of the strike zone, ie, tough out]

4. B [...or H, but I take B because she runs better and has a better average]

5. G [...but I could flip 4 and 5 and not feel bad]

6. J [Good hitter can hopefully move the slower runner in front of her]

7. D [avg & slugging % says she doesn't hit all the time, but when she does "lots of power" says it could be good!]

8. E [...between A & E and probably depends on who is needed for defensive play]

9. K [This is an interesting study I think....low avg, good slugging says she "swings out of her shoes", but on the other hand she doesn't strike out much. Hopefully this batter would work more on swinging under control and in balance to raise her average. Vs weaker opponents I would let her lead off and challenge her to "just get on base not hit a home run". Speed in front of the top of the order is always nice.

What I find even more interesting is that none of them in your list were listed as slappers Purple.

You gents and ladies watching the WCWS up there in Ohio?

Speed Kills. So do left handed slappers.

Will Northwestern stand up to the speed and slappers AZ will put at them tonight and tomorrow?

Dont get me wrong, I would love to see NW win, but I dont know if the defense can handle that speed and slapping style.

If the NW pitcher is on it wont be that much of a factor, but then after watching Hollowell (AZ pitcher) this past weekend, she is pitching better than I have ever seen her pitch.

Will be interesting to watch.

Elliott.

Like I have told many an umpire crew when I hand in my lineup card, "I don't like it, but its the best I've got"
1. C
2. J
3. F
4. G
5. B
6. H
7. E
8. D
9. K

A- On bench

PurpleJack, where is your G batter, 2nd best average has to be in the lineup somewhere. OH!! I see now, just like in purple land, you bat H twice in the lineup, and sit A&G on the bench. Now I see how you guys won the league 5 years in a row!! LOL

Thanks Lady_knights...G at #5. I had "H" in there twice. As an ump, I doubt if you'd let me get away with that ;D

Anyone else have some players - ficticious or real - that we can work with to propose lineups?

I'd like to hear everyone's reasons/strategy for placing players.

which letters are your pitchers or catchers. that would be information that would help for utilizing courtesy runners in the batting order.
