Need some wisdom our team has a wonderful young women as a coach very loyal and dedicated to are daughters. She has coached this team for three years with no support from org. that we were under. That being said team is leaving org for new org with hopefully stronger leadership. How long do you give young coach to get better with game day desicions. You older coaches had to start sometime and go through growing pains what advice do you have?

Great question as I think about it ... my own DD is in her 3rd year of coaching as well, and she and I have been co-coaching and/or assisting another coach during this time hopefully imparting some bits of wisdom on her. With that being said, I think I got mine several ways ... from having coached my own kids as they grew up and kind of growing up my coaching skills at the same time, assisting some other coaches along the way, and by being a student of the game ... having played in and watched a ton of baseball and softball games over the years. It can be very difficult for someone right out of school to coach at a high level without having received a lot of mentoring over the years, assisting for others, etc. It sounds like you think highly of this young lady, which is great, but my guess is she could benefit from some time actually assisting some more experienced coaches for a few years ideally.

As you obviously recognize now, a good org would have provided your coach and team with more support from their experienced coaches. A good org will do some of the following:
- Monitor some practices - preferrably in person, but at least review practice plans.
- Have your team practice with an exemplary team.
- Monitor some games from either the outside or inside the dugout.
- Have your coach monitor/shadow an exemplary coach during some games.

Longtime coaches from our HS age teams were very active with the younger teams, especially in the Spring when their teams were dark.

Has your coach improved each of the past 3 years? I'd be very concerned if she isn't looking to learn from new org.

She has improved some she took over team when they were u11s now going to be u14 the core of girls been together since u8. The original coach was leader of org and he was very experianced and talented coach . Team has won alot over years . Parents that have been around for awhile have seen the difference between them. Leader dosent do the things like you posted any more thats why we are going elsewhere. Very tough would like keep core together the only way would be go to new org with same coach and hope they would do some of the mentoring you are talking about. Most of the girls are trying out with other teams just in case it dosent workout. I would be willing to give another year if she be willing to take suggestion from leaders of new org . They have alot of experiance they have told us the coaches that they will have will be schooled in the way they want there fastpitch program run Thanks for sharing with me God Bless

You nailed it.

If the coach doesn't improve and leave the nest she just might be the one. Not all have it. Just like on the job...continuous improvement is a must or the game will pass you by.
