i have noticed on more than one try out listing that the coach saying there is NO FEE. I get the impression that there are rumors flying around about different organization's try outs and someone saying that they charge..
I have never heard of any one charging to try out. why would there be the rumors? Is this a standard practice with some teams to do?

I have heard of some elite teams charging a fee to try out but I believe for the most part, there isn't a fee...

You gotta be kidding......

Dangerous precedent... What's the logic? Because they can?

The Junior Olympic volleyball clubs have been doing it for years. I think the Ohio Valley Region (OVR) had to place a cap on it to stop clubs from gouging people. Organizations have to justify their costs if the exceed $15. Think about it; this is an awesome fundraiser for these orgs, they may have as many as 100 girls tryout for 2 positions.

My DD attended a tryout last year that had 203 girls tryout for a 13u team. The club did end up with 4 teams of 10 girls and charged them each around $1100 to play. Club Volleyball is a racquet.

I have never heard of any Fastpitch club charging for tryouts. Hopefully not the new trend. I will never charge for my clubs tryouts, just isn't right unless there are extraordinary expenses involved.

Not sure if they still do but other Pittsburgh teams had tryout fees also.....
Pgh. Spirit was $20 Pgh. Pride was $10.

Rampage tried a $5 one year as we had alot of local girls come out the year before to all the tryouts with no intention of playing on travel teams, kind of like a 8-12 hour fastpitch clinic for nothing.
Personally I don't like it and as an organization we decided better to offer a "free clinic" to an area that is so far behind in the game then charging a fee. Who knows maybe some parent will allow their kid to get involved if they see what their kid can learn in a couple days.

? ? ?I would not allow my child to play for such a team. The Ohio Emeralds don't charge for tryouts.

I talked to a coach from Minors Gold (Cali.) a couple years ago, they charge $300 for try outs with no refund if the player does not make it. The money is used for their travel and other things.

I think we should make them pay for the privilege to look at our kids....

Thats a fact, many high profile teams out west charge a non refundable fee for thier tryouts and use the proceeds to fund their program. Thats how competitive it is. Remember many California players do not even play High School ball, simply travel all season long. Little bit different circumstances.

I guess that if you do not think your kid has a shot then you better not waste your time or money. On the other hand, if they make it, I guess you know that they are in a pretty small minority.

I for one do not like the practice of charging people to try out. I think it sends the wrong message.

Don't forget also, there are lots of teams out west that also pay for their coaching. I know in baseball, some of the elite teams pay the head coach upwards to $60,000 per year, and I have also heard this is true now at the softball level.

I think it's great to play hard travel ball, but give me a break.

Being in the college recruiting process, I put colleges in the same breath as this topic. Contact a college that your DD is interested in and you recieve a brochure on a camp. Prices range from $75-$300, so you pay the fee to get your DD a chance for that college.
Yes, they will recieve instruction and it is only a positive for any player but is about the same as paying for a tryout in travelball.
