2 of the girls play are on my dd's HS team and they won't be released until Saturday afternoon.

What's up with that wiggy? Why in the world would a high school coach not release girls who are done with the tournament and are looking at a possibility of qualifying for the Nationals of the premier fastpitch sanctioning body? Even if there is a regular game left, I'm pretty sure the coach could release the two players in question.

Also, it is not at all unusual for an open national qualifier to have very few local teams. First, relatively few Ohio teams make the commitment to attend ASA Nationals (true nationals, not the regional nations) and second, precisely because the tourney is open to anyone from anywhere, it's not unreasonable to assume that the tournament will have what would (in the absence of the "open" designation) be considered carpet baggers who are a pretty good lock to beat Ohio teams.

The neat news is that this year, if Doom and Lasers Red participate, that Arizona team might go home with nothing more than a used up plane fare. :yahoo::yahoo::yahoo::yahoo::yahoo::yahoo:

Neat term carpet baggers. Teams from out west have been doing this for years. Had a team play 14U in Akron that flew in from Calf on a dad's private jet a few years back.
Our high school is out of the Sectional, but we are making up games due to weather to determine the conference title and they won't be released till Sunday. Perhaps that is what wiggy meant. Still gets back to what you and I talked about cgs. OHSAA needs to change.

We have 3 league games left. All league games have to be made up, regardless of if you are still in the tournament or not. We play tonight, tomorrow and Saturday. After the last game it my understanding that the coach will tell the girls that they are "released" and they will then be able to join their summer teams. If I'm wrong someone can correct me, but I'm pretty sure on this one.

Correct. With all the rain outs, we have the same issues. Last game is Saturday.

Triplethreat, better be carefull what you wish for the Red may just show up , and I'm sure Doug would'nt mind one bit if the Red were no shows , remember this is a national quailifier. As always best of luck to Doug and the Doomers.

I still think this is way too early for a national qualifier in an age group that players in High School will not be able to participate yet. Did I read that correctly? Only 4 teams and 1 of tehm is from Arizona? They are going to go back home and tell all their friends that there was only 4 teams entered in an ASA national qualifier and we are going to look like a bunch of rec ballers. If they award two births then our state should be embarassed. :(

It would have been fine to run a 10U or 12U this weekend but not 14U. I would think that the ASA State Commisioner should no better.

Good point. But why did they travel 1200 miles? Hoping to catch Ohio at it's weakest moment with school ball still going on?

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe OH is one of the FEW states that has these high school rules that if you're in HS you cannot participate in your summer team as well.

Great comments. That is exactly why they do it and we only have to Blame the OHSAA being in the stone ages when it comes to travel sports!

Cat - that is my understanding as well.

Slammers were planning to play but are in the same boat with too many girls still playing in Regionals or with regular season games left due to rain outs and rescheduled games that conflicted with sectionals/districts.

Really stinks. We were excited to hear they were coming to town and wanted nothing more than to head up to Findley and give the teams from out of state an "nice" Ohio welcome. Glad to hear Red will be there. Good luck to the Ohio teams.... send 'em back hurtiing.

I'm not sure that I see it that way johnnies. I doubt that the out of state team knows anything about our wacky rules. They are just coming to play some quality teams and take a shot at getting qualified for nationals. Its just a shame that they will not be playing some of our states best 14U teams at full strength. Again I question why the state commisioner would allow this national qualifier to take place so early in the season. Lets forget the rule for a second. At this date in the season teams will not be at their peak. Don't we want our representatives who win that national birth to be at full strength when they play this type of tournament with whats at stake? I think so and thats why I am going to contact Warren and ask him to consider moving any true national qualifiers back until after the high school season ends in the future. maybe if enough of us do the same it will have an impact.

BenBudda - no argument that it is a mistake to allow an ASA National Quailifier to be scheduled when State HS rules prohibit teams from that state from being at full strength. (Although, some sanctioning bodies allow tournaments played indoors on partial fields with drop dead time limits to be quafiliers but that is a different issue)

As to the teams coming east to play, I think they absolutely know what the rules are in Ohio. These are not teams that started yesterday. They are coming here for one reason, to qualify, not for the competition. They wouldn't spend the money if they didn't think it was guaranteed. They know their odds are slim for qualifying back home against the big boys so they are coming here looking for easy pickings. They are in mid-season form and ready to roll.

Plain and simple, the OHSAA is hindering Ohio softball and whoever scheduled the tournament is basically giving away Ohio berths.
