Just because it is an ASA/USA Qualifier is no reason to be served up **** and take it. Nothing will change if you attend just because it is a qualifier. There are way too many asa/usa qualifiers to play in sub par tournaments. Not trying to stir it up, I am honestly asking why people attend the dayton metro even though people bitch year after year. If I am unhappy with a tourney, I don't go back. Period. I will gladly drive another hour or two to get good service. Just my opinion.

One of the highlights of the 10U tourney had to be watching 10 year old Maddie (Mad Dog) Lawrence from my team (Wave '01) hit an opposite field home run over 200 ft. fences. She can flat out crush a softball, and the thing about her is she isn't just a power hitter. She hits for average too. Very disciplined at the plate. We didn't have the issues that the rest of the divisions had in the 10U tournament since it wasn't on city fields. We really enjoyed ourselves. Great competition, and well ran by Doug and the Hawks. It shows that most of the issues really come down to dealing with the city. When your constantly worrying about that aspect then other things seem to happen bad as well. Great tourney. Congrats to the Lasers Green.

fyi....Dayton has great facilities and probably could do a good job if managed right. Chris and Clyde do a good job with the summer league. The metro asa/usa tourney just seems to go sour year after year. Wish it didn't.

First year I was there, and wasn't aware of previous issues. I would not recommend my team going back unless I had some assurance previous year's issues were addressed.

We went up to Berliner to play since we were out so early Sunday and their fields were worse. I know the guys, Shorty, Chris, Lou and the Hawks are doing their best with their hands tied, but how stupid and short-sighted does a local government have to be to see all the money being spent in their city? It was a big deal to be a ASA/USA qualifer and brought lots of teams in, hopefully they come back.

will the scores or results be posted for all ages once you guys get time to recover from the weekend? Would be curious to see how the 10u's did. Love checkin' in on how the future ballers of the game are doing. Still love that 10u age group!

12u-18u Brackets are all updated on Page 1 .. 10u will be done this afternoon.

I will get scores on them as we have them... we used the 'text your score' method and I would guess less than 40% of the coaches/teams actually texted scores in, many times we had to run players, etc down to get the winner... 10u bracket will be up shortly.

Congrats to Buckeye Heat Zoltowski for winning the berth in the 16u tourney! We've had contact with them this morning and it looks like they will join us for side pool action at States.

When I heard someone hit a bomb, I had no doubt it was 'Mad Dog'. She absolutley crushes the ball. She has quite a future ahead of her, along with many of your Girls.

Why do people go back to such a tourney if it is that bad ??? Curious?
I agree with you VS. It seems that the fastpitch community has taken to whing and crying about everything possible. **** it up, play the game and let the results speak for themselves.

Doug and crew, in my opinion it was a very well run tournament. Had good umpiring, fields for the most part were good, and the organization was tremendous. The number of conveniences you added, such as the one call, were top notch. It seemed to me that you used the funds to better the tournament for the girls.

Thank you Greg... we did many new things this year that we have not done in the past - we got the city to put up fences, yes, only 3 when we had asked for 4-6 but they were there. We did the one call (I am sorry if I overused it). When we found out Thursday that the main 5 dia complex would be avail Sat/Sun we took it - even though we had already contracted with Delco Park for the 14u all weekend .. we paid Delco AND we paid the Men's TD that had the complex his $250 deposit that he had forfeited to the city and we paid the city - it cost us over $800 to move the 14u from Delco over to the Complex when everyone else was and the college coaches were.

We did have the city line/rake fields some Friday, I know at Delco we raked between games Fri, and Sat they and our folks raked / lined every 3 games at least. Sunday -I KNOW we raked the complex and quad after every game - and lined after every game - I personally raked from 10am forward every hour.

Restrooms / PortaPots - unacceptable ... actually restrooms ran out of TP once but they were clean - Rumpke PPots - bad - we called the City/Rec Dept Sat and Sun - they never came to clean them - we will be calling the City today on that.

Scoreboards - we paid Jeremy to run the score board at the quad, Friday we did not do a good enough job, I agree (BTW: when we showed up Fri and field 5 was unplayable (it was in the same condition as wed night when I went there and checked on the progress and they were working on it) - we had to move games to K15 (which we left K15 and K4 open on the schedule (instead of allowing more teams in) for rain/issues - thank God we did)) - we kept the brackets up to date Sat and Sun at both locations once all teams / schedules settled down. Fri was shaky, I admit.

Scores - I don't know why but we did not get scores / texts .. I thought for sure that would be easy way to get scores .. we got maybe 40% texted to us...

College Coaches - I might have missed it but I dont see any comments that all the local and some not local colleges attended - I know somewhere around 40 schools made it over to watch games this weekend - Miami, UD, Wright State, Urbana, Hillsdale, OU, to name a few came ... yet none of the complainers here have stopped for a second to say, thanks for reaching out to the schools for my DD, - our girls appreciated that. I saw many college coaches talking to head coaches and players - I know of 2 schools that told me they 'found' players they are going to talk further too.

Those that know me, know I pour myself into this for my team, my org and for the softball community at large. for our SWO teams to be able to go 30 min and play in a national qualifier, play top teams from all over the state - is a great opportunity. I hear one phrase every year from the 'new' teams that come - 'it is an eye opener to see such talent' ...

I will say this I am encouraged by comments from long time OFC'rs like Greg and the many, many comments I got from others like Rex (Lasers Orange), Christy (Doom Gold), Dink (Nitro), Kavin (Static), Shane (Ohio Wave) and more... one of them said something to me this weekend that I appreciated, he said. It was, "Doug, There are Orgs, teams and coaches that go around playing like they are owed something. They give very little back to the softball community, they just take for themselves and are concerned only with their team and their players. They want everything perfect for them, every call to go their way, and they act like this is more than youth girls fastpitch. Ignore them, do what you are doing and remember the 95% of all the others that do appreciate what you are doing...".

Kavin, great job this weekend, well earned Championship... your comment at the awards presentation also hit home. Kavin thanked me and the org for the tourney and said that "he appreciates the Hawks for doing this, because he / Static in no way would ever take something like this on..." ... I hear you, maybe are actually smarter than me ;)

With that, I want to thank all those that played. There was some great softball this weekend. I hope the City will one day realize that and help us out more. We did decide one thing for next year - NO GATE! I never liked it, but with us getting no concessions we need it. We are not going to charge a gate in 2013 and slightly raise the team fee instead.

I hope everyone has a safe and rewarding summer...

Doug

I you knew Gregg's and my history, you would laugh at your statement... we go back to some early days where we were not "exactly" friends... we have grown to respect each other and become friends but believe me Gregg has no reason to at all to *** up. Right Gregg? ... lol..

Doug,

From an outsider (non-player parent) looking in here's what I saw this past weekend.

Pros:
Unbelievable competition. From 12U (didn't see 10U) to 18U I saw some incredible ball being played.
Fair. Whether you were a "top dog" or an up and comer this tournament gave you an opportunity to win.
Full games. the 1 hr 40 min required bracket play time limits once again gave every team a shot to win versus drop dead tactics.
On Schedule. With so many teams there are bound to be a few minutes here and there but from what I saw everything was pretty darn close to being on time.
Centralized location for college coaches. Whether you wanted to see 14,16 or 18U having games at the quad was a great idea.
Warm Up Areas were plentiful.

Cons:

I know you all don't control the city but I saw MANY games where there was absolutely no batter's box or baselines. With the fields being dry as a bone this can obviously influence bunts.
Umpire Interaction. Again, I know you don't control this but I saw a few calls that made me raise an eyebrow or two. I actually watched one game where an umpire made a call based on fan input. Some of them just seemed a bit under educated.
Bathrooms. Wowza.
Concessions. You should have had a concession area at Delco and more windows open @ Kettering. If nothing else - have someone selling water in different locations. Temporary Fences. I can't tell you how many balls I saw (especially @ 18U) that should have been stopped by a temporary fence but rolled forever. I think teams will all admit that they are okay with a legitimate HR but one that rolls for miles is tough to take.
TD also having a participating team. This one is just mentioned because I know you wanted to do your best for all the teams as a TD but I can't imagine your own team didn't suffer a little with everything you had to do.

All in all this is a very good tournament. It's got some growing up to do but for a 2nd year event I thought it was darn impressive. Issues sure but you can obviously tell this is a year round project that takes many hours to plan and execute. I certainly wouldn't want to undertake anything close to what I saw over the weekend.

Props to the Hawks and all of their 40 teams :).
