ASA Tournament 2012 Metro Dayton - June 8-10,2012

I have a question to ask everyone. Wilson is one of our Hawks sponsors so we used Wilson ASA .47 core leather softballs. Folks said they sounded soft, me included (at times) .. but I watched all weekend and I don't think they performed any different. The Wilson rep came out on Sunday and we discussed it and he watched some games as well...

What was everyone's thought? Did you notice? was it only the sound or did you think they performed differently?

On Friday, every ball in our games sounded and performed as if they were soft. On Saturday, every ball in our games sounded and performed normally. My guess is that there were a few cases that were bad and the remainder were fine. It happens......

Which model were they? The A9031 have polycore inside and the A9060 have cork. I've read the cork centers break down quicker - an 18u qualifier said the balls were turning into mush by the 4th inning.

For the most part I also thought the balls were very soft - even when new at the beginning of the game. My pitchers made some comments to me that they balls felt different & even the seams felt weird - this was on Sunday. There was one ball that we could actually move the cover w/ our hands on Sunday.

I wondered why your pitcher would switch balls once a foul ball got thrown back in. haha - good luck this weekend.

I wanted to thank everyone for playing in the Dayton Metro…. All in all it was a great weekend of softball. Paperwork for those teams qualifying will be mailed shortly.

I also wanted to pass on that next year, 2013, we will eliminate the gate fee, and set the tourney fee at $550 for the 4 game guarantee ($450 for 10u). We do have the entire 14 field complex in Dayton and plan on hosting 24-32 14 teams, 24-32 16u teams, and 12-16 12u/18u teams – and as many 10u as we can get!

We will play the 2013 Metro on June 7[SUP]th[/SUP], 8[SUP]th[/SUP] and 9[SUP]th[/SUP] – again starting between 10am and noon on Friday. I had lunch with the UD coaches today and I spoke with several others last week, they loved the format and level of play and will return to watch more games next year. We are going to shoot for 50-75 colleges in attendance next year.

I hope that we will see your team return in 2013 …
