How does the Big Ten rank with other conferences? How many teams can compete with say SEC or PAC?

maybe they need to recruit more CA kids

Hope your not serious. Tier 3 and 4 west coasts kids are not as good as Ohio's tier 1's are they? Coach needs to seriously spend more time recruiting some home grown talent. Just my opinion..

Your kidding right? PAC 10 has 7 teams in top 25. SEC has 7 teams ranked in the top 25. I'm guessing that was a loaded question.

Only two Big Ten teams are ranked. That kind of says a lot about competing with SEC and PAC 10.

Michigan is ranked #2
Indiana has votes

Ya think. Look at the two best Big Ten teams this year and how many kids are from the Midwest-

U Michigan- 8 Michigan kids, and 4 Illinois kids.
Indiana U- 6 Indiana kids, and 3 Illinois kids.

The whole recruiting thing upsets me.

Michigan Colleges should have mostly Michigan kids.

Ohio State should have a ton of Ohio kids.

It just makes sense. And the top kids from each State can compete with the top kids from any State. The issue is depth of talent not the top talent. Where you are going to run into issues is maintaining a high level of play because if you miss on a girl you do not have the depth of top talent to back fill.

Dug a little deeper...

- Recruits: 2011 SoCal (2) and MI; 2012 SoCal and GA; 2014 SoCal.

Indiana starters: SoCal (5), IN (3) and IL (2).

Bad news - Tamayo has only pitched a few innings in HS this year due to injury. Mater Dei isn't doing well without her. She looked fine in a scrimmage, but left the first game and hasn't pitched since.

BTW, the other team's pitcher in the scrimmage was Haylie Wagner, one of Michigan's 2011 signees. We're looking forward to her leaving our league.

Michigan hit Kelly hard .. The dd at least was excited to see her pitch, after facing her in high school.

Link to May 7 article in the Indianapolis Star on Melloh. I didn't know about her issues with A.D.D., but interesting that Fresno State was the only University to give her a scholarship offer because of the issues that came along with the ADD/testing.
My DD played SB wtih her little sister when we lived in Fishers, IN and I remember what down to earth nice people they were/are.

Indiana Makes It 15 Straight Wins With 1-0 Victory at Northwestern. Morgan Melloh 13 k and gave up only 2 hits in the shutout. Now has 454 strike outs on the year.

In surpassing 450 strikeouts this season, she becomes just the fifth pitcher in NCAA history to have three or more seasons with 450 strikeouts - joining Monica Abbott, Cat Osterman, Angela Tincher and Daneille Lawrie.

Does anyone here know why the Big Ten eliminated the conference tournament at the end of the year? Sometimes teams peak near the end of the season and miss a chance to go to the big dance. Maybe some players get healthy later in the year. I don't get it.

From Big Ten Cuts Softball Tournament

A new-look Big Ten softball schedule starting in 2009 will not include a postseason event.

"The main reason we dropped it was to make what we feel is a better overall conference schedule for the student-athletes," Illinois softball coach Terri Sullivan said.

Previously, Big Ten softball teams faced two opponents and played a total of four games during three-day weekends. The format included single games on Fridays and Saturdays against one foe, followed by a Sunday doubleheader against another.

Starting next season, Big Ten weekends will consist of single games against the same opponent on Saturdays and Sundays. In addition, teams will play Big Ten doubleheaders on Wednesdays against nearby schools either two or three times a season. In 2009, Illinois will play Wednesday twin bills at home against Indiana and on the road versus Iowa and Purdue.

In order to maintain a round-robin conference schedule, the Big Ten softball calendar will expand by two weekends ? starting one week earlier and ending one week later.

The new schedule puts the Big Ten in line with other conferences and is expected to reduce overall missed class time. Sullivan also looks for the quality of play on weekends to improve with fewer games and less travel for visiting teams.

"We were the only conference that played four games in a weekend," Sullivan said. "Our travel was fairly maddening. Last year, we were at Penn State and then we had to be in Michigan on a Sunday for a doubleheader.

"It's a great conference and you want to have great games in it. This should help with (less) missed class time and overall better games."
