Sorry to hear about Abby, best wishes to her and the girls next year.
I had the unfortunate experience of one of my dd's taking a linedrive in the center of her face several years ago. After several surgeries she's still beautiful, unfortunately came back to the game, pitched like a champ but could not overcome the experience and eventually gave it up.
(wish they had face guards then)

I know we'll be using them in the future with our teams.

GREAT SEASON, KEEP IT UP.
(Give Abby a hug for us)

Thank you all for the kind words and wishes for Abbey -- her health right now is the biggest concern for all with the team and we're thrilled the prognosis is for 100 percent recovery!!
It just seems like forever when you're looking at recovery time, which is the only healing agent.
Thank you, also, for the suggestions and names and Internet site for the faceguards. We'd already put into mental action a rule requiring pitcher and corner infielders to don the protective fasemask to start fall ball, but as one of the posters points out it's really a smart idea to have ALL the infielders -- like there aren't any bad hops in Ohio softball fields!!!!
I know from our vantage point that we've always been concerned about this type of accident, but thought it just happens to ``the other guy.''
For it to happen to a superior athlete such as Abbey should be a warning flare signal to all. Her hand speed is extraordinary -- but it doesn't matter when a muscular 200-pounder is whipping the heck out of a high-tech weapon. We all need to give the kids as much protection as possible.
Again, thanks to all the well-wishers. It was a unfortunate ending to a phenomenal season for the Little Slammers.
Hopefully, we can turn our temporary misfortune into education and warning for other young athletes in this great sport.

Bigtrain,

My daughter was playing SS as a 9 in 10u 2 years ago inside on the smooth Spano fields and a low throw from the catcher on a steal attempt skipped up funny and nearly broke her nose. Game stopped, ice, a few jokes, and she was back playing but she looked like a mess for 7-10 days, and was lucky to not have worse - you never know. And, no, she did not wear a mask afterwards - I'm a MUCH better "preacher" than "practitioner" LOL - it always (mostly) happens to the other gal, as you pointed out. ::)

Sorry to hear about your pitcher! Why would any team go to nationals with 1 pitcher? You need to reimburse the families for their expenses for traveling, hotels, etc. What a let down for the other players. Didn"t anyone teach you to have backup plans?

Sophie,

Come on now. People have beat up bigtrain, and others, for picking up players to go to nationals. Now you want him to reimburse families for not picking up players? The families of the team knew what they had and what would happen if something like this, an injury, happened. Myself, and many more, are thankful and praying that Abbey is okay and on the road to a speedy recovery.

Da** if you do, Da** if you don't.

Pickle, you're right -- it's much easier to preach than practice what you preach -- this one, however, will be a mandate to the kids, not a suggestion
VanAlm -- Thanks for the words -- I've learned when dealing with idiots they believe only they are correct, even when they're speaking out of both sides of their mouths.
The parents readily accepted the decision to travel with 10 (EVERYBODY was in EVERY inning of EVERY game, heck we did it viritually ALL the way through a 54-13 season) and to withdraw instead of putting a 10U pitcher on the firing line against 200-pound sluggers from SoCal!!! I didn't need a vote, I just made an easy decision putting the safety of the kids first. The only merited refund is to the idiot poster whose lobotomy obviously was a failure

I am in total agreement with wvanalmsick. After all, it's softball. When we go to nationals or even a tournament we know the consequences of injury and losing. It's part of the game. I don't know about your team and families, but our team became a huge family. If one of our players got injured it was a family issue - WE ALL helped out.

The other consideration a coach and even parents need to take in is how a major accident will affect the remaining players - where is their focus? If their focus is on . . . will or won't I get hit - the decision has to be made. One girl seriously injured is an accident two girls seriously injured is pushing selfish.

Mad one, so true on so many counts
The families all had a great time staying together at beautiful Lake Monroe. The kids had great water sports activities and when it was over, everybody was ready to head back to real life after two grind-em-out weeks on the trails of national softball tournaments.
Of course, there is more than just softball. My little one went to Chicago to visit her older sis and got to see a king -- Mr. Tut at a special world-wide tour at Navy Pier!!! And a queen -- Jennie Finch after the Chicago Bandits game!!!
Well, I guess it always does go back to softball even when we wander off course!!
Thanks again for your thoughts

Im sorry about your pitcher, but if I remember correctly you have bragged about having 9 and 10 year olds on your team I think you yourself have put your kids at risk.
