I am one of the Pickerington parents attending this game. ?I would like to present my version of what happened at this game. ?I have no problem first of all admitting that I do not come close to knowing the rules of 12-u softball. ?However, I love to watch the game and support my daughter and her team. ?I just found out about this posting this afternoon, and especially after reading some of the ridiulous postings, felt the need to post a reply. ?
First of all, the reason our games ran late, is because a Gahanna girl broke her leg sliding into home, which delayed their game. ?Our games, from that point on were delayed....not a problem, at all, with us. ?We felt horrible for the girl. ?
When we finally arrived at the diamond to play the GFOD Thunder, we were told to be ready in 15 minutes, as stated by ATharp in his earlier posting. ?The ump. did not give us the time we were promised. ?So, after the ump. "warned" our coaches, they went out on the field. ?At that point, I knew we were doomed with that ump. ?It was one thing after another, call after call....over and over again. ?During the game, when our girls took the field, he would immediately start counting. ?I guess they were not moving fast enough for him. ?It was only about 95 degrees that day...and I personally was concerned that my daughter be able to get a drink between innings, she is only 11. ?Let me just say, that our team did not slow the game down, or take exceptionally long to get on the field. ?Yes they were hot, and tired. ?This is just one incident. ?There were many other petty, nit-picking things that the ump. did.
I would also like to address the comment by softballaddiction about the 6 innings of constant heckling...I'm not sure you were at the same game I was. ?That comment is just simply NOT TRUE! ?Yes, it is very frustrating to watch your kids work so hard and get beat, but that is the nature of the game. ?The GFOD Thunder was a very good team, no question. ?None of this had anything to do with them. ?The whole thing was about the treatment our team received from the umpire. ?It is my opinion that he was irate that our coaches did not jump when he said "jump" at the very beginning of the game. ?And as a result, proceeded to take his hostilities out on our kids, instead of working it out with our coaches....This guy was all about, It's my way, or the highway.
I also heard the comment that put the ump. over the edge. ?It was 2 parents taking amonst themselves. ?It was not yelled, or loud. ?And as far as I am concerned, that parent made an opinion about the situation to a friend....that's it.
Let me also say that after the ump. walked off the field, I personally felt that we should have given the game to the GFOD Thunder. ?They beat us, end of story. ?Once again, it wasn't about getting beat. ?Shoot, we get beat all the time. ?It's not fun, but it's part of the game. ?It was all about the ump. for me.
Let me finish by stating that after the ump. left the field, he was in the parking lot changing his clothes. ?One of our parents walked to their car in the parking lot to get something from their car, and overheard part of a conversation with the ump. and one of the GFOD Thunder coaches. ?The ump. stated, according to one of our parents, that he was calling anything that was close just to get the game over. ?This ump. was older and he was a big guy, so I am sure the 95 degree temperature was having it's affect on him as well.
I would like to apologize for any bad feelings that this situation caused. ?We were not crazed parents. ?We just expected to be treated and umped. fairly, and I believe we were given a raw deal. ?I hope to see the GFOD Thunder again. ?

pickmom. You will be glad to know the Gahanna girl is doing fine although she broke her leg in 3 different places. She has a cast from toe to hip and was at our tournament this weekend flying around in a wheelchair.

Not that this thread needs another post, but I'm going to anyway. I direct a fastpitch program in Central Ohio and we had a team at this tournament. I was not present in Pickerington, because the team I coach was at GAPSS that weekend.
?It's very un-fortunate that this kind of thing happens at games, but this is not an isolated incident in fastpitch. Similar stories play out all over the U.S. every weekend. I feel badly for the GFOD team, just because there victory parade was rained on that day and they didn't deserve that.
?Being a close neighbor to the Pickerington area, I'm very familiar with the sports fans there and many of them are very intense, when it comes to playing or watching a game, no matter what sport we're talking about. I've brought our teams to tournaments in Pickerington for several years now, and it's always been a good expierience for our kids. The tournaments are always organized and the people in Alan's program always seem friendly and helpful. Maybe you notice a slight personality change in that friendly mom or dad that just sold you a hot dog from the concession stand, fifteen minutes ago and now their on the bleachers accross from your team, cheering and yelling for their little dd to hit that run in, or catch the ball with two hands, but that's ok too. Some of them forget that no matter how badly their dd's team beats the other team, ESPN crews will not be doing interviews after the game. The President will not be calling to congratulate the winning team and Nike will not have an endorsement deal waiting for the MVP. There are some intense parents/fans at almost every game we play, both on my teams and our opponents. Pickerington parents sound similar to parents in Toledo, Marysville, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Orlando and so on.As a coach, I try to listen very carefully to the things my parents say during a game and if I feel like we are getting close to the edge, with our cheering, I take charge of it before an umpire has to. If I don't hear it and an umpire ever tells me that our parents are out of line with comments they are
making, I address it right away. I think that would've helped calm the Pickerington situation tremendously.COACHES:YOUR TEAMS PARENTS ARE YOUR RESPONSIBILITY!!!
?We are taking all four of our teams there again, this weekend. We are looking forward to it. I'm sure that any changes that needed to be made to insure smooth sailing were made. They always put on a good tournament.

So what did we learn from this?

1. You cannot be a coach/team representitive and a TD or Site Director at the same time. Pick one job.

2. Coaches, control your parents.

3. Parents, learn to how to be a good sport.

4. TDs and Site Directors, communicate with your staff. This includes all of the people working for your tournament. This includes the umpires. The use of good communication skills could have avoided this whole ugly incident.

As I look at all the postings on this topic, itis apparent that it dosen't need another one but there are a few things that need to be cleared up. I am the head coach of the Pickerington Thunder 12u team. The acting SITE DIRECTOR does help me at times but he was not, is not, the coach.
Here are all the facts that are relavant to the situation. We were supposed to play a elimination game @ 11:00 am that got started @ 12:20pm. We won that game and immediately had to play the semi-final game. The Championship game was scheduled for 2:30pm. We finished the game at 2:30pm. At the end of that game the umpire, same as the ump for the semi-final game said coach you you will have 15 minutes before we start. At 2:35 the ump wants to do the coin flip,
we had just gotten to the field we were playing on. Yes this did upset me as I was trying to get a pitcher warmed up and do my line up. The umpire then had an attitude because I wouldn't jump to his comand. We were NOT given any warning at that point and the umpire never walked over to our dug to ask if we could do the flip, one of my assistants told me he was at the plate counting, whatever that meant.
I only questioned one call all game, although there were 2 different stirke zones.Ours was from shoe tops to forehead, GFOD Thunder was normal. I talked to a GFOD coach as we waited for another umpire and he made the same coment, 2 different strike zones. This is not sour grapes, GFOD is a very good team and beat us.
Yes the umpire did say anything close he was calling against us, to a GFOD coach, the same coach I talked to. This is a classic case of umpires just wanting the $$$, and don't care about calling the correctly.
As far as the Pickerington fans, I never heard anything other than moans and groans on close calls. If they had been as bad as everything I have read you would think the umpire would have asked me to calm them down, but at no point during the 6 innings did he ever mention anything about the fans and then all of a sudden he wants them all removed?
There were none of my coached on the field saying BYE as he walked off. We were all in the dugout except for the Site Director.
I have read many postings about how it is for the girls. This is absolutly correct. It is not about the coaches, umpires,or fans. One posting said that it was tough break for us that we had to play back to back to back with no break. How would you feel if one of my players had a heat stroke? Remeber it was over 90 degrees and we had played 2 games back to back with no break. Most of my players hadn't even had anything to eat, because of the delays. So if it is about the girls and being safe the umpire should have demanded a break so the girls could cool down, get some fulids, and something to eat.
Well I have rambled on long enough so in closeing I will say 2 things, Congratulations to the GFOD Thunder great job, and the tales grow taller on down the line.
