What were some of the good/bad tryouts you attended

My DD tried out for 6 treams in 12U recently. By far the most well run tryouts were Ohio Emeralds in Medina, and The Wolfpack in Massillon. She has been offered positions on four of the six teams for pitching and hasn't heard back from two of them. She ended up accepting an offer from The Wolfpack. As a parent, I underestimated how hard of a decision it would be to choose a team. It wasn't hard to rule out two of them, one was going to carry at least 5 pitchers, the other had no plans until January, so they're out. But turning down a team we liked and that had everything we weere looking for is another story. There is always that little voice in the background questioning whether it was the right decision. My DD, wife and I all weighed in and came to an agreement, but it wasn't easy. Is it just me or have others dealt with these same feelings and second guessing?

Yes-I second guess all the time which is why I leave the decision up to my DD. They tend to be able to sense the talent/chemistry of the girls and coaches from try-outs.

Thta's a good idea. I also think girls should pick the teams to tryout for because there really is no point of trying out for a team if you have no intentions of playing for them

DD went to 4 tryouts and the Wolfpack was most impressive. Well organized, and coaches actually paid attention and coached/taught kids. During tryouts teams need to sell their organization a little bit and they did a good job of it.

My daughter actually picked the Wolfpack, but would have played for the Emeralds if I would have pushed. She liked both and bounced back and forth over the last few days. Like I said, both organizations offered everything we were looking for. We're excited and looking forward to getting started.

MC Madness. Excellent try out. Pre-registration down loaded from website. Photos taken of girls with their numbers so coaches could put a face with the evaluation forms. Coaches spoke to everyone prior to start of tryouts about the process and afterwords about expectations . They had 4 fields each with a different station. Coaches and evaluaters were at every station and watched every kid perform. Pitchers and Catchers were segregated at the begining and each pitcher was evaluated seperately one by one. Catchers followed next and also evaluated individually. Infielders and outfielders went to other diamonds to get evaluted Pitchers and catchers followed them. Hitting was first done off a pitching machine to see if kids could hit ( machine clocked at 58 mph) then followed by live pitching - game situation, balls and strikes along with steals - throw downs. Lasted about 3 hours
I was very impressed by the process and how organized it was run.

Yeah. I vote for MC Madness tryouts. The best-run session we saw this month. We really loved the game situation at the end of tryouts. The coaches were double checking with everyone to make sure they had participated in every situation.

I am curious to know about how many were at tryouts to be able to put them in game like situations and still be able to get a good look at everyone.

My favorite tryout was the one where DD hit her first ball over the fence and when she was told it wasn't high enough or far enough she hit one over the outfield scoreboard.

Well, for the 14U tryouts there were 18 girls, but the way they diud it it would have worked with fewer numbers as well.

There were also at least 6, maybe more M C coaches and officials, there to evaluate specific positions and watch what was going on. Both on the field and off.

Went to the Grand Slam tryout yesterday, they did a great job especially for a start up organization. Great job with paperwork and station to evaluate the girls. Thanks!

Attended Lancaster Thunder try-outs over the weekend. Not a lot of girls there for the older divisions (16U & 18U) and it made me wonder why? What do they know that I don't?
I noticed that the coaches didn't pay any attention to the girls while they were warming up - they were talking to each other and not even looking in the players' direction.
Other than that - tryout was so so - timed base running, basic fly ball fielding, basic infield fielding with a throw to first, and hitting off the pitching machine. Pitchers and catchers got very little work - one player (pitcher) was put in cold to pitch to one batter and that (I guess) was her tryout. The other pitcher got to pitch to a couple batters and that was it. (I guess the electric went off at the field so the pitching machine couldn't be used - otherwise I'm not sure they would have pitched/caught at all)
While the coaches seemed nice enough - I didn't leave there with the warm and fuzzies - there was no contact with parents at all, players were not told when they would hear anything, no information on planned tournaments, etc.
Overall - definitely could have been better.

More rec than travelball. They like to stay close to home with local players. Nice enough, They have thier " regulars" . Mostly looking for a couple of ringers to play the skill positions. (SS,P,DH,DP);&

Come on, there's more to it than just winning or losing. If you are a coach and your DD is on the team are we really to believe she has to try out for a position? There is something to be said for keeping the girls together that have played together and have become friends and have a certain chemistry. There is nothing wrong with keeping a solid player you've known for 2 years over an outstanding looking tryout player. Teamwork, friendship, character is all a part of what we are doing this for. Any coach who would discard a girl that they have worked with, trained, and invested hundreds of hours of time with just because he thinks he can have a little better player take her place isn't in this for the girls, their in it for how great of a coach can I make people think I am. This is part of the problem with travel ball.

Now a good athlete with a poor attitude, who can't get along with the other girls or with a negative vibe, certainly she can go by by, but if a girl gives it her all and has a good attitude and has been a faithful part of the team, she should have a place on that team.

By the way, teams don't have openings to be filled solely because some girls sat on the bench and quit. Every year there are a few to several girls who move up and those positions need to be filled.

Any coach that would not have any loyalty to a hard working player with a good attitude, who worked her butt of all season, and would replace her for what looks like a "better player" who he's evaluated for two hours in a tryout is not a coach or program for that matter that I would want my DD associated with.

Just my two cents.

This aint the major league fellas, don't let it go to your heads........please.

I'm of the same philosophy. Good post. ;)

It's all about goals and being of the same goals and mindset.

Sometimes the Org and or Teams goals change along the way and could be in any direction in which some in that org/team are no longer a fit. This is life as we all know with our economy and jobs the last 10 years.

No different! Those with similar goals and mindsets stick together. The divider here, is sometimes some on these teams may have the same goals but not realistically capable at current to commit/contribute a level needed.

There is always a place for a DD/Family, just find like goals with like minds and it should
last at least for a little while if not many years.
