My first year coaching was at the JV level, and I had the same situation. ?I eventually found a girl that could slingshot the ball consistently. ?
Do not bother worrying if they are doing the windup and just find a girl that can just underhand the ball and get it across the plate. ?Its to late in the season to try and develop a pitcher. ?Good Luck!!

you may be surprised in how many pitchers you have. I have a pair of sisters on my HS team, 1 is a pitcher the other is not. The other day during pitching practice the girl that is not a pitcher wanted to throw a couple during break. Quess what, she could throw strikes and with some speed, not varsity speed but fast enough.

I think you will be suprised when you line them up at 40'. 2 years ago I had an outfielder that I caught goofing around before a game trying to pitch. I ended up pitching her for the rest of the season.

A lot of these girls havepitched in rec ball and little league and they just don't tell anyone.

One thing not to do is have them throw over the middle of the plate. Any part of the ball that touches the plate on the corner, front or back, in the strike zone is a strike. Also, don't be afraid to have a girl that shows promise, go to a pitching coach and be evaluated. You would be surprised on what a good one can teach in just a lesson or 2. If anything it will give them some positive reinforcment and prevent them from doing things wrong that may cause arm, ?elbow, shoulder or back injury. :'( Good Luck!

Been there. Patience...patience...patience...you will need it ;). We probably "grew" more that season than any other. On the positive side, it was great to see the girls that truly had the "team" mentality. We had 3 girls step up and try because they knew the situation and they had "some" pitching experience when they were much younger. Stay positive and hang in there!

Thank you for asking. Today I had all my girls throw a slingshot pitch from 40 foot away. OH Dear!!! Patience was the answer BUT, I did find a girl that was a pitcher in elementary school. Her form was not good but ok and she dribbled the ball alot but not all the time and most of all she was soooooo excited she told me that her and her Dad plan on pitching all week-end to show me what she can do on Monday and if I would call her she would love to come out and throw on Sunday!!! Here we go!!! I am very happy about her attitude and determination. I really think I may have found a diamond in the rough? Please know there is a lot of work ahead of us but it really has made me feel better. Now, the ohter two pitchers I have, I worked today on control VS speed. They did very well when I told them to take velocity off their pitch. They did super BUT when they threw 10 pitches across plate, they thought they needed to throw harder and everything went back to square one. I am trying but oh my!!! Old habits are a disgrace!!! I also had these 2 girls throw the slingshot and they were very unsuccessful!! Ever hear the saying? "YOU CAN'T TEACH AN OLD DOG NEW TRICKS"? Not all but if you do not have coachable girls, you are doomed..WOW!! Did I say that??

As I mentioned earlier, your situation is similar to my first JV year. ?I had a girl come to open gyms starting in October, that had never pitched in her life. ?The varsity coach say's "this is your JV pitcher." ?I put her down on 1 knee to have her do some single arm circle drills, working on her release, at a wall about 8 feet away. ?Her first pitch went straight up in into the ceiling, rattling the rafters. ?I just rolled my eyes. ?She worked extremely hard over the next few months, and I felt come season she would be ready to throw. ?She was doing the windmill windup, and throwing consistently around the plate. ?

The first game came, and I put her out there to throw, but there was one problem, there was a batter!!! ?After 5 innings and giving up over 30 runs and probably as many walks, I was numb. ?The next 3 games were exactly the same, walk, walk, walk, run scored....My assistant coach by then is saying, can't we try someone else. ?Me being stubborn said, "No, she is the only one that wanted to come in and put in the work, so she is our pitcher." ?After a few more games I gave in and tried someone else. ?I brought in a girl who had thrown slingshot in rec. ball, and she pitched a majority of the rest of our games.

The girl I had worked with, kept working and turned into the varsity starter the following year as a junior. ?And had she not had 2 minor accidents her Senior year requiring her to miss the first half of the season, she probably would have had an outstanding Senior season, for a pitcher who never pitched her first ball till her sophmore year.

I believe in "Diamonds in the Rough," but it will take alot of patience. ?Good Luck!!

Yes, I am now the Varsity coach at the same school, Northmor HS. ?Starting my 5th year as the Varsity coach, and nothing really compares to it. ?I coach a 16U travel team as well as my 9 year olds coach pitch team. ?Each has there own special place in my heart and there own unique challanges. ?The rewards far out weigh the frustrations. ? Softball is Life, Enjoy while you can!!!
