Performance Enhancers

Now that the Mitchell report is out: There is no doubt that players has used substances to try and gain advantages. This is the dark side of sports, we may have all heard rumors at some point of some one taking something to gain advantage. My question is, do you think this has invaded too far into womens sports, especially softball? Remember Marion Jones, is she an isolated incident. Has competiveness and wanting to become the best come this far?

Red bull seems to be the enhancer of at least the younger players---not that I would ever have one as well! I would think at the upper level you might be surprised at what some people will do to compete with the "Jone's".

Anyone remember the female bodybuilder from "In Living Color"? Her name was Vera. Pretty sure she was on something.(A Jim Carey character)

luv2catch,
You are so right. Even though I have had a few myself and have purchased them for a certain player that wakes up slowly in the morning, I have often wondered whether or not I am in fact contributing to the thought that a player needs "something" to perform better. It would be better to stay away from this slippery slope.

Been takin roids all these years and still can't break 130lbs... Am I missing something??? :)

No, but truthfully you can bet they are in women's sports as well and as bad. They are just hitting the tip of the iceberg on this stuff. Marion is just the first one to go....

What scares me the most is that they are not just in womans sports but they have probably hit HS and J.High sports because people think they need them to get an advantage... pretty sad :( :( :( :( :(

BTW from someone who "sells" those energy drinks( not all by choice) they are really bad for you....

I think theres always the chance someone will try to shortcut their way to better performance in their field but the i think one of the reasons it really hasnt shown up in WOMENS softball (or alot of womens sports) is unfortunately, the money isnt there like in mens sports where it comes up most often.
Example: With the overwelming intense competition in college baseball/ minor league ball to make it to the "show" and land the big money contracts, players will do anything for a advantage over the next guy. Then once you get there, you need to stay at that level to keep from having the next "hot pospect" that comes around take it away from you.

Just trying to answer the original question.......

What about coffee? Don't "we" consume it to "enhance performance"?

I think you must have a "cut-off" as it were. If the 'substances' are legal to possess and obtained legally, what can you really say or do? Otherwise you could take it all the way to the type of food players eat - do the players who eat all their vegetables and have balanced diets have an 'unfair' advantage over my daughters who consume large quantities of ho-ho's, Monster and twinkies? If so, I think any losses my daughters sustain against teams who advocate the balanced meal performance enhancing regimes should have an asterisk by the loss column! ;D

Unfortunately, enhancing substances have been around and will continue to be around, not because of the pressure to be the best and win at all cost, but because many sad adults and kids do not want to do the work necessary to be as good as they want to be. And they think that is ok. :-/

This topic has been bantered around on here before. Allowing young kids drinking that stuff is just teaching them that there are shortcuts to excellence. Steroids are rampant in high school sports, especially where no testing is done. But the secret is out, and the powers-to-be are taking steps to re-level the playing field. Hopefully, the MLB situation will send a strong message to kids wanting to advance to higher levels in sports.

Fortunately, the NCAA banned substance list pretty much eliminates the cheaters (if you look at it that way). ALL the NCAA athletes, male and female, are exhaustively warned about performance enhancers, so there is NO EXCUSE for a positive test! Even the high dose of "legal" caffein in some of the energy drinks can get you busted. Rule of thumb - if you have the slightest suspicion that a drink (or any substance) contains something on the banned list, DON'T DRINK OR EAT IT! There are simply NO excuses.

I'm gladd DD has stayed away from the drinks, the cream, the syringe, the cookie, the energy bar, or Barry Bonds/Roger Clemen's trainer....she does everything the old fashioned way...plenty of exercise, rest, texting, steak, carbs here and there and a great brekfast on saturdays and sundays...now as for me, pass the ab-master!

I would say the most widely used and most successful performance enhancer for travel ball is FBC (Fake Birth Certificate). I've suspected more than a few who "were on the ink" but I could never prove it.

I think when we start seeing "beard stubble" in fastpitch the sport will be in big trouble!
