Spent some time with Howard Carrier this weekend

Hello all,

Just thought I would share with you that I had a visit with Howard out here in Oklahoma City this past weekend. We watched team USA beat team Canada in an entertaining game which Crystal Bustos put away with a 3 run shot into the upper bleachers at the stadium.

Howard is a first class hitting instructor and someone you would want teaching your child. We talked hitting and much more and could have gone much longer had I not had to get back to Dallas that same day so I could give lessons the following day.

Howard introduced me to his friend Micheal Bastian who currently coaches team China and has a large resume of softball experience to his credit. That too was an interesting conversation in that Michael shared with me how his not being able to speak the language has improved his communication skills because he has had to develop other ways to communicate to his players to get them to understand what he wants. He stated it has made him a much better coach.

Howard and I stood beside the ASA hall of fame under the trees out there exchanging ideas, concepts, and information about hitting for at least a couple of hours prior to the game. If anyone was watching us they would have been scratching their heads and asking what are those two old farts up to under the trees. ;D

I also got to watch Howard interact with some young ladies who were sitting behind us during the game. They talked to Howard briefly while we were sitting there discussing hitting and I asked them if they knew they were talking to Crystal Bustos hitting instructor. You should have seen their eyes light up. Throughout the course of the game Howard was talking with them and interacting and giving them insight and information on what he teaches hitters. They soaked it up like sponges. All the time I am sitting there grinning on the inside and out. I had to apologize to Howard for getting him into that situation. I think he enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed watching him talking with those kids.

It is always great to meet someone and put a face to a name. In this case for me it was much more. As we talked I realized Howard is very sincere about what and how he teaches kids to hit. We have a lot in common not only as instructors but as people who care about teaching kids not only how to hit but what life is about. Because that is what is really important when you get to the bottom line.

I enjoyed this past weekend with Howard and I will stay in contact with him often. He has a lot to offer in many ways and you are all lucky to have that kind of person willing to share his life with you. I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone at anytime.

Elliott.

Elliott,
Knowing Howard I am sure he enjoyed the time talking to the girls in the bleachers as much as they enjoyed it! And have to say his methods work! Most of the girls on DD's team (16U) work with Howard as do the coaches who then use his methods with the team. This past weekend our team scored 66 runs and allowed 8 in 8 games. And I heard from one of the girls on our team who has a sister on an 18U that the 14U Xpress (Coach Larabee from Wright State) were able to win some games playing up at 18U.

Coach B is also a class act. We were lucky enough to meet him as well as Crystl when DD was 10U and have been fortunate to have him consider us friends over the years. He, like Howard, care about the game and also the girls more than most people will ever understand. I could just imagine a travel team coached by that duo!

Crystl and Howard are going to be doing some clinics in the fall here in Ohio. If you get free time you should make the trip up this way and watch them in action.

Glad you got a chance to meet Howard and from that I am sure you know why all his kids think so highly of him. There are always people who do not agree with him and don't want to come to him or try his methods and to that my DD at least says she is happy becacuse that just means less people she has to share his time with-lol I for one can honestly say there is no way in my lifetime I can ever repay Howard for all he has done for our DD and not just hitting. He has been an instructor, mentor and sounding board for her over the years. He is truely one of a kind.

I've been trying to get Elliot to come back to Ohio for years, but he must like it too much down there in Texas! :)

Sounds like a fun time in Oklahoma!

Elliot it was great meeting you and sharing information about how we view hitting one on one...a lot of information gets lost in the translation from the brain to the fingers at times and actually seeing someone demonstrate it makes it clearer.

A good example of this is Ringer....who knows what he could possibly be thinking and Boulders dad...making her hit tires and chop down trees with a softball bat for batting practice...I wondered what happened to the trees in their neighborhood!

We got to see some good games played by everyone and got some great pictures.

While Team USA was taking batting practice Crystl hit the longest ball we think to date she has ever hit...in left field there is another field and a light pole for that field....she hit the pole which is 94 feet from the 300 foot fence or 394 feet and it hit the pole at about 75 feet high so it was calculated to have touched down IF it had not hit the pole at about 465 to 469 feet!

Cat and Monica took batting practice last and the outfielders all came to the infield and some were using buckets to catch the balls and everyone was laughing about it and cheering them on.

If you are ever in OKC stop by the Memorial down town and it will take a piece your heart away and bring tears to your eyes.

We also met three vets at the games Sunday, one without legs, one with one leg and one whose arm was missing....suddenly softball was not as important. We gave them a hug and thanked them for their service and sacrifice.

Bret,

I have been wanting to do something up there in Ohio for several years. I just have not had the time to commit to it and I cant seem to get my wife to understand that this would be my ideal vacation. ;)

She seems to think I need to go back and visit family. Or go to some god forsaken beach and toast like a marshmellow on a fall night. If I ever get the chance to set up a clinic up there this forum will be the first to know.

I agree with Howard that while visiting OKC, you must visit the memorial and museum. My daughter's softball team and their families visited the memorial last year and everyone left the memorial deeply moved in some way.

From the website: www.oklahomacitynationalmemorial.org/
The Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum was created to honor those who were killed, those who survived and those changed forever by the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. The Memorial and Museum are dedicated to educating visitors about the impact of violence, informing about events surrounding the bombing, and inspiring hope and healing through lessons learned by those affected.
