OFC is excited to announce that the 8th Annual Heat?in It Up held at Denver
Park in Wilmington, Ohio will be June 5th, 6th, and 7th again. As you may
recall, this is a "Family Friendly" tourney with NO GATE FEE, large park
grounds, reasonable concessions... The BIG change from years past is that,
we will be an ASA Eastern National Qualifier for both ?A? & ?B? Classes. We
had 54 teams last year and we look for this move to only strengthen the level
of Teams to an already highly rated Tournament.

* The format will be 4 game guarantee. There will be 3 pool play games
per team and a single elimination tourney.
* The tourney fee will be $375.

ASA rules will apply unless noted below

Pool Play
* Typically 3 games
* Games may end in a tie
* There are an unlimited number of players who may be placed in the
lineup. All players will hit and be allowed to play defensive positions.
* Tie breakers will be head to head, runs scored against, runs scored
for, and coin toss.

Tourney
* Single elimination tourney.
* ASA substitution rules will now apply.

Game Lengths
* Pool play- no inning shall begin after 70 minutes.
* Single Elimination Tourney- no inning shall begin after 80 minutes.
* Every attempt will be made to maintain 80 minute games for the single
elimination tourney. In case of rain, pool play game lengths may be
compromised in order to provide 80 minute bracket play.
* Time will start once the home team takes the field (or umpire
announces that the clock has started)
* There will be no time limit for championship games.

Re: 9th Annual Heat'in It Up

You had my attention until I read the 70 minute time limit line.

At this point...... the "Miller High Life truck pulls up and strips you of your right to hold a tourney, mumbling about it being Un-American to hold a tourney where there is no chance of getting in a complete game as it was intended.";&

POOL PLAY GAMES- remember that no inning starts after 70 minutes so most games go 70-80 minutes. As long as teams hustle on and off the field, below are typical scenarios.
-7 inning games occur when there is good pitching on both sides.
-6 inning games are the norm for higher scoring games.
-5 inning games occur when there is a walk-a-thon. These often end in a run rule anyway...

SINGLE ELIMINATION games are 80-90 minute games so most of them go the distance.

Last year this tourney had games starting on time with very few complaints. The umpiring was decent and the food was reasonable at the park with many choices outside the park. It was a good experience for the 54 teams that were at the tourney. We received overwhelming positive feedback with no complaints about game lengths.

If you have your girls hustle on and off the field (and throw strikes), you will have a good chance for 7 inning games.

If you don't have time limits, you can easily fall off your schedule with teams waiting around to play. It's good for concessions, but not a good experience.

Right or wrong, that is our logic for the time liimits. With the positive feedback from last year, there was no reason to change things this year. (other than moving to ASA..) :)

We will have an 18u age group as well. Some of those games will be played at Wilmington College as well as Denver Park. The two sets of fields are close in proximity.

Sluggerfest has been spread out over multiple weekends so it's hard to miss all of those dates... We were the first weekend in June last year and will stick with that weekend long term. We can't help what Sluggerfest does in regards to tourney dates.

As I recall, we had three Doom teams playing last year. Another Doom team called during the last week to get in (unfortunately, we had a waiting list). You may want to check with your teams, but I doubt that there was a 3 inning game all weekend (unless is was a total mismatch). With that logic, if a 70-80 minute game only lasted 3 innings, it would take at least 150-160 minutes (2.5 hours) to complete a seven inning game. See above for typical game lengths. I suspect that the three Doom teams at the tourney can verify the game lengths I mentioned above. If it looks like we can lengthen the games, we will, but last year it wasn't possible and we didn't have any major complaints. Remember that we typically don't start the clock until the home teams takes the field and most games last 5-10 minutes longer than the 70 or 80 minute time limits.

We are comfortable competing with other tourneys and comfortable with our how our tourney was run in 2008. There will always be other tourney options. There needs to be enough tourneys so all girls that want to play softball have an option to do so...

We welcome Doom teams and any other organization to our tourney. One reason that we have all age groups is so organizations can bring their whole program and watch each other play. Having both A and B brackets will make it even easier to do so... We have already had some organization indicate that they would like to do so at Heatin' it UP in 2009. We hope that Doom is well represented at our tourney as well. We enjoy competing with the teams and we enjoy the girls and families.

Best of luck in 2009

Doug, was there last year with Static and they won out in 6 or 7 games that all went between 4-7 innings. The 95 degree + temps that weekend were the only challenges, as I thought the director, umps, and ground crews were great.

Let me make sure I understand. I get the bit about all players being allowed to hit but you can have all players play the field? You can have more than 9 out on the field?

Inferno must be new to the way some tourneys are played.

Basically, anyone who is in the batting order is "in the game" and can be used to play one of the nine defensive positions. There is no limit to the number of players who can be in the batting order. (But, you do NOT have to bat everyone, you can choose to have subs on the bench.)

If you have to remove a player in the batting order because of an injury, etc., the position is skipped and does not count as an out, as long as at least nine players remain in the batting order. However, the player who missed the at-bat is now "out of the game" and can not reenter, either as a batter or as a defensive player.

That prevents skipping a bad batter in a crucial situation.

If there are enough of each age group, we will run the A and B brackets as two separate tourneys. Each will have its own pool play and bracket play with a spot in Eastern Nationals. Obviously, if we don't enough of a bracket, we will have to be flexible...

OFC Heat Orange is looking forward to the change to ASA. We are also hoping to see a field of teams like last year. That field would have any tournament bragging. In the 16U alone last year there were Laser Aqua, Stingrays , Buckeye Heat, Viking Elite, etc.. It was a great Tournament to kick-off many of our summer seasons.

Looking at the websight at what teams had already committed and was curious as to which OFC Heat 16u team was coached by the infamous Scott Urton...lol?

The very humble Scott Urton coaches with a great group of coaches and they are with the OFC Heat Orange. Now as for this tournament. When will we see that very talented Lasers Team's name show up on the list of entered Teams. Last year we had a very nice Lasers Aqua team represent the Laser nation very well and finished 2nd to a very nice Stingrays Team. When Teams like the Lasers, Stingrays, etc.. add their name to the list it signifies a quality tournament and we feel that is what this tournament has become...lol to you!!! Hope to see you soon.

According to everything I've seen so far, this tourney is set for June 5-6-7. Well, on the Ohio Fastpitch Club web site, on the registration form (pg 1) it says June 5-6-7, but on page 2 is says June 6-7-8. What is going on? With my team, 10 of my 12 players are in school until the 5th. And I noticed that last year the first games of this event were Friday at 3:30pm. Not sure how other teams pull this off, but there's no way I can get my players home from school, packed and up to Wilmington anytime Friday for games.

Am I alone in this thought?
