Ump over the top?

A warning to players, make sure you call time before getting up after sliding on the bases. Ump called one of our players out at third after she got up and was then tagged after play was over. I initially thought o.k. but the call did seem delayed after play, then I saw how he handled himself at another play at second base.

He was in a body position to make the initial call on the slide and held it for a few seconds appearing to dare the player not to call time and get up. The player is looking to him and after a few seconds asked for time.

Can't the ump call time on his own? It sure appeared like this was his "thing".

What do you think?

Its common for defenders to keep the tag on or watch for a player to get off the bag after sliding. If the ump was watching for it he's doing his job. Its the players responsibility to ask for time.

time has to be ask for. The ump will wait for the play to end, this will be if time was asked for or ball back in the circle. He may call time then and clean off the base if any dirt may be on it.

Did the defensive player keep the ball on the runner continuously?

Lot's of players and coaches seem to have the mistaken notion that immediately following a slide into a base the runner just automatically has "time out".

This is not the case. Some things to consider:

- The possibility of other base runners who might be on base. Calling time too soon deprives the offense of the opportunity to run the bases and the defense to play upon them.

- After aquiring a base, a runner must demonstrate that she has sufficient control of her body to maintain contact with the bag. In many cases, her momentum will carry her past the base or her lack of bodily control or balance will cause her to lose contact. If she loses contact, she has not demonstrated bodily control and is subject to being tagged out.

- After the play, the defense still has some responsibility to throw the ball back to the pitcher. There is always the possibility of an overthrow which allows runners to again advance.

From a playing and coaching standpoint, players should know to never assume there is time out unless they have clearly seen the umpire signal and call time. Players should also be taught the correct way to regain their feet while maintaining contact with the bag after a slide.

The tag was not maintained or held but player still had the ball.

Thanks bretman for the great teaching moment. Hope anyone reading will remind their players...Call time and do not assume you have it!

OK, not to be pednatic, but how could the runner be called out if she was not in contact with the base, but was not tagged?

Tag was applied when runner slid into third. Tag was removed and play appeared to be over. Runner steps off base while getting up and then is tagged. As bretman explained, she should have called for a time out... What made this look unusual was the amount of time between the actions...

Sorry Chicoflip...How a bout this...

As bretman so eloquently explained after reading chicoflip's words of wisdom, call for time or the ump might not be kind!

BTW, I get to typing too fast. The word comes out correctly in my mind, but loses something getting to the fingers. Thank you for the correction, and the definition.

Plus, now that I understand the time frame, the whole thing makes sense.
