Tough Coaching Decision

I also witnessed a coach pull her player from a game because she purposely lowered her shoulder into a runner that was coming into a base that she was defending.
There was no throw and the umpire was not looking. Sportsmanship is a vital component of sports and many thanks to coaches who do what these coaches have done.

These decisions are really easy calls for coaches with integrity.

This weekend I witnessed what I thought was one of the most couragous coaching decisions I have witnessed. The team had used all of their subs and had 9 players on the field. The pitcher developed quite an attitude on the mound. She laughed after hitting a batter, talked back to her coaches, made hand gestures to the other team and was a total disgrace. The coach pulled her from the game and played with 8 on defense and took an out for the player on offense.

Hurray for this coach for encouraging disipline and fair play with his team!

Finding out through the grapevine who this was.... I have to say how very proud I am of you Coach!!! What a great leader to his girls, parents and the softball community!!! Way to stand strong and set the tone..........now if only others would follow!!!
Also thru the grapevine, heard that upper level of the organization was there and backed him up in his decision........... kudos to you also!!!

I wanted to ask but thought they answer would stay silent...
What happened was an incident on our 14u team that my DD plays on. It was embarrasing and Coach Derek and Coach Ron made the right call.

Earlier in the day we had run ruled Greg's SDS team but they came back in the afternoon and pounded our pitching - returning the RR favor ;) ... our organization will win with class and lose with class - that behaviour will not be repeated. Earlier in the day the SDS girls and coaches took their defeat with class and we never heard anything from them. It happens in softball - sometimes you get pounded.

Afterwards we spoke to the team and the player and her family. She is now on a one and done situation. I hope she learns from this and will grow as a person - if not, she can find some other place to play ball.

Coach Derek preaches A&E and how important it is, he showed with his actions that he believes it 100%.

I apprecaite Greg's post about Derek, even the umpires came up afterwards and commended Ron and Derek.

The best part of it was that I had 3 parents and 1 player email/text me that night- thanking me for supporting the move and saying how proud they were of their coaches and to be a Hawk. Just goes to show, even out of an ugly situation, some good will come.

Doug,
I did not intend for a team name or an individual name to come out. Thank you for the compliment. We do have alot of good kids playing with SDS. There is no place for putdowns and belittling other players and I was pleased with the way your team handled it.

I seen this incident happen and I'll have to say, I was happy to see the "powers to be" in attendance finally letting the coaches handle their own problems. Usually the "powers to be" will just BAN you..... :lmao: :lmao:

Hats off to you guys for letting your coaches take charge!

What a great example set by the coach, not only for his team but also for those watching...

I have no doubt that our coach would do the same thing - even though it's rec ball. My mom was my coach growing up, and it would have been more than pulling me from the game. I would have come off that mound with pigtails flying, getting beaten off the field. That's good coaching.

In my experience, both the SDS and Hawk organizations are class acts. And a pat on the back to Derek & Ron.

a pat on the back to Derek.

Not that it really matters and they can correct me if I'm wrong but coach Ron is the one that pulled her off the mound............ I'm sure it was a mutual desion though. Again, kutos to the coaches for making that tough decision.

Derek and Ron conferred on it, then Ron walked over to tell me, while Derek walked over and told her parents what they were going to do and why. Derek then walked out the mound and replaced her, while Ron went to the umpires and told them we were going to play with 8.

Her attitude at last night's league and tonight's practice was 180 degrees better. She hustled and once when they were getting drink Ron told her to come on and get back on the field and she jumped up and out of the dugout... I really hope she continues to improve her A&E. BTW: Mom and Dad support Ron and Derek on this and were at both games and practices this week to stay on top of it...

Doug, we salute you and your organization's position.
... it was a long day. We had another time where we did not uphold our A&E...

I actually had a brief exchange with one of the parents earlier in the day, that I wish I had just bit my tongue on. I went back to the parent within minutes of the exchange and apologized to him in front of the girls / as did he and we told the girls later that the 'heat' of the battle does not justify losing ones cool.

It was a lesson for them as players and us as coaches...

Overall, the day was disappointing in terms of our play but we all grew some as well...

Thanks for all the kind words. I have been out of town and have not been on OFC to read this thread. This was a very hard decision for me but the time for talk was over. I actually have pulled kids for poor A & E before but this was the first time we had to play short handed. Hopefully, this young lady and the team will be better people and players going forward.

Thank you again for the kind words and a BIG thanks to the 8 girls left standing that finished the game. They did not surrender and kept fighting all the way to the end.
