Rating Players Skills

All kidding and ball-busting aside, I DO think it's important that "volunteer" coaches step back and start considering what is best for the individual players. If you have a tryout and you know you already have a third baseman, for example, and the best kid at the tryout is a third baseman--- and that's the position she wants to play and her parents want her to play-- then you have an obligation to explain to her and to them that she won't be playing third base on your team (at least not very much). "I really want Betty on our team and I think she'll bat clean-up, but I wouldn't play her at third. I'd play her in the outfield. It's up to you."

The question you have to ask yourself is: Am I willing to take a chance on losing a great player for the sake of honesty and for the benefit of that player. My considered opinion is that 9 out of 10 coaches would avoid that candid conversation in order to get that player on their team.

To me, that's just wrong. This isn't the professional draft we're talking about here. These are the decisions that can shape the rest of these kids' lives. You owe it to them to do the right thing.

All the rest of this conversation is just ego and B.S.

cgs,
No problem, I deleted my posts completely. It's not worth the arguement today, tomorrow or never. I have no idea on DIII as I said before, I played DIII baseball in college and I assure you it was just a step above Legion Ball!!!! If the daughter plays college ball, I dont care what level it is as long as I have the ability to watch. Good Luck at All Sanctions and I'm sure we will talk again on this thread or another.

If I were coaching I would look for

1.Attitude
2.Fielding
3.Hitting
4.Throwing
5.Speed
6.Knowledge (can always be further taught by coach )

I think folks actions and words both in person and on posts like this one speak for themselves.

I truely think you should plug in Player/Parent Attitudes first. You are making memories with your team. Keep them positive and you win more than games, something greater in life skills. Positive actions bring positive results.
I always stop to listen and watch a positive player no matter which team she is on, 9 times out of 10 the parents are positive as well.
Plug it in, Plug it in! The rest falls in line Speed, throwing, fielding and hitting
I know the score of the games is what we are looking for but you win with people and that last longer than the box scores in the paper.

Oh, Speed should be very important, that is what I fell short on when I tried out for the bigs, A Pro scout said to me " Your hitting and fielding are great, your arm is average but we can teach that to anyone...... your running speed is something you are born with that is what we look for." So the game is made up of running, if they can not run at the speed of the level you are in that will break the speed on defense and offense of that player.
