blame it on my son, he swears a curve ball doesn't curve. I ask him if has ever batted against anyone over the age of 10 . The answer was " doesn't matter It's an optical illusion " and he's NEVER been wrong --don't believe me just ask him.:lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao: MD

PS I've got alot done today -- well OK , not today but usually I do alot --getting rested up for softball practice from 5-7 ! thank God NO V-BALL practice today.

PSS --back to work Coop at least I'm at home today !

You do have too much time to burn. You could just tell him as long as the rotation over powers the speed it'll curve.More rotation in the same amount of distance equals to more movement. On the next question, pop him!!:lmao: on the back of the head, and say "Cause I said So", LOL.Not really an illusion but a mathmatical equation. Not sure what the equation would be but you got time and so does OFC.LOL. The questions kids ask are funny.Parents who acknowledge them are funnier. Can't blame ya ,it's been a mild summer on here get em started.

I thought my DD knew everything but I have come to find out that she was only half as smart as my son is. Wow It took me over 40 years to learn what I have learned and he has learned that and so much more in only 12 years.

Hey MD,

Explain to your son that he was duped much like the scientists were about the curveball being an illusion for a half century. In 1959, a scientist by the name of Dr. Lyman Briggs actually proved that a curveball curves. Dr. Briggs applied proven physics laws, such as the Magnus effect to bolster his theory. If you will recall from high school physics, the Magnus effect is the effect of trajectory on a spinning object. We could go further on this expedition by diving into the Reynolds number ( ratio of inertia force and viscus force on a body in fluid) and Navier-Stokes Equations. I cannot replicate the proper keystrokes to furnish the softball minions with the actuall equations. You can however, if so inclined, google the equations and you can work them out while waiting in line at the batting cages!

Good Luck,
Cliff Claven

p.s. It's a little-known fact that the smartest animal is the pig. Scientists say if pigs had thumbs and a language, they could be trained to do simple manual labor. They give you 20 to 30 years of loyal service, and at their retirement dinner, you can eat them.

I agree. Global warning is causing curve balls to break even more as of lately.

So with the globe turning and being a sphere, is there ever really a straight pitch???^_^! Is movement more related to height and release of pitcher....^_^

In Softball, doesn't it really depend if the "Dad" is catching. Mine thinks she has a curve and I guarantee it doesn't move enough to be called one. LOL

I definately seen them rise up before as an umpire. It's actually a great pitch even though parents don't like to see strikes called on the pitch...lol

Saw a drop ball turn into a rise ball once it hit the front of the plate today that crossed the umpires eyes, and folded him over. WOW IF I COULD ONLY CALL FOR THAT PITCH WHEN I NEEDED TO GET HIS ATTENTION ABOUT A STRIKE ZONE BEING TOO SMALL.
