Use the younger brother (the thought that the catchers equipment I came home with was the best thing in the world intil I told him to gear up for his sister). On the other side of the coin after catching for his sister for a year and a half he has developed into one heck of a Baseball catcher. If he can catch her at 5o plus at 40 foot that is the equivilent of 80 plus at 60, and how many 12 year old boys throw 80. He can also get ahold of a couple when I let him hit off of her, which the boys in her class can't do "LOL".

Don't forget the steel toed shoes, have had both big toes broken because of dds drop. The one even tore the toenail off right through the tennis shoe. Walmart steel toed tennis shoes about $25.00. Worth every penny. Also wear full catchers gear and sit way back on bucket it will protect the jewels.

The little ear protection flaps on the side of the mask... Maybe great for protecting the ear... But not good on the temples. Knocked me silly one tournament in middletown.

Catcher protector... a must for any adult catching daughter. Never would have thought of that....lol... can see orders all of a sudden coming from OFC members/coaches....hit once and it will be money WELL spent.

I still like the bucket. However, since I can't see the pitches anyway, I put the bucket over my head for protection. Haven't caught a ball yet but my good looks are preserved!:D

That's awesome! Edgeoo puts a little Monty Python flair into his catching style.:lmao::lmao:

Dana, I don't have a death wish. I'm just too damn ugly to care. :D

....and she doesn't have to go to work the next day either. :D

I'm usually out in the yard, on the bucket in bare feet, with a Pepsi or coffee sitting behind me. I know that I'm livin' on the edge, and one day it will not end so well. I've heard lots of horror stories, but haven't had any real nasty knocks yet...outside of a rare sore shin or taking a one-hopper off the forearm.

It's usually my teeth and not my junk that I'm concerned about protecting. Although I see lots of Dads who are maskless and sitting on the bucket sideways, so maybe that should be a concern.

Those low pitches with alot of movement that seem almost uncatchable from my perch way up on the bucket will usually get me to scamper out of the way and let it go by. When my dd ribs me about not trying to catch it, I always remind her that this is not a tryout, and I'm already on the team. ;)

Somehow, I feel more in danger when I suggest that Mom sit in for a few. ;&

First, I've got about 6 years on you Quakerman, so I guess I'm feeling better about still catching the dd. I like the idea of using siblings. The only trouble is they claim they have their own lives and are too busy trying to earn a living. And one of them is even a softball coach. He always was the smarter one. Although the older dd did fill in for me when I strained a shoulder catching the younger dd.

My shirt sleeve is wet from crying from laughing so hard. But I will be hunting the softball section at the Play It Again Sports in North Olmsted.

Best thought yet..Phil (Play It Again Sports). I like the "protector" actually...lol What a "smart" invention.

I can still catch..lol Was a HS pitcher and catcher. Probally why..when umpiring... I like the painted corners.... give me a ball thread on that corner !!!!!!!

I always carry a bucket. Bad Knees at my age. Tried the boy friend idea and she about killed two in a row, which was kind of good in a way, they went away! This one is smart enough , not to use I can catch a girl attitude! Drop ball taught me to use my umpire stuff, after a few broken toes.

This post is killing me, for more reasons than one...Older daughter throws hard, righty, good lateral and down movement--Has broken two buckets on the concrete rebound, three bloody noses for dad, and has "rung the bell"
(dad's know what I mean, and I am NOT talking about my skull....) a couple of times. DD 2 comes along, finally figuring out the way softball spins different and moves different than baseball--she's a lefty, and soon as she gets some control, starts throwing everything low, hard, and BACKWARDS! Her favorite pitch is the "peanuts" pitch, and I will let your imagination run wild on that one. Only good news is, if I know the ball is staying low, hard, and moving, HOPEFULLY the other team will have worse luck hitting it than we do catching it. Any dad who catches, whether in full body armor or commando, has my respect. Now, where is that ice pack.......

I must commend all you bucket sitters, I can't catch anything on that bucket. I just use the catchers stance, it lets me get to the ball better before it gets to my face or shins. Luckily for me, I have no "bell" to ring but it still hurts!! It can be pretty scary back there, especially with the newer pitchers.

I think there is a conspiracy by pitching coaches when teaching DD's to "Ring Daddy's Bell". (By meaning = ringing Daddy's bell/"peanuts pitch" is a good pitch to throw. If Daddy can't catch it... hitters can't hit it. And Daddy has an incentive to catch it !!!!

I do the stance as well, the bucket scares me because you really cant get out of the way and the drop ball always seems to hit something somewhere. If dd gaines anymore speed or I start to feel older than I already do, then she is going to start throwing into a net.

My dad quit catching me and then took chalk and markout an "X" on the side of the school building next door. No explaination given why he quit .....just know I had a supply of balls when other balls got soft from hitting the side of the building .... lol (see bell ringing theory)
