Pitching and Pitchers Discussion Protecting dads from dds who pitch

I admit it, my reflexes aren't what they used to be. Plus my dd's pitches are getting harder. Anybody have a line on a lightweight adult face mask? Something like a rip-it mask would be great. It's starting to get dangerous sitting on that bucket.

Thanks Quake. I've developed the reverse Johnny Bench style: Instead of holding my throwing hand behind my back, it's in front down the middle.

lol... hand is still not much protection...lol

Suggest this: Is DD is old enough to have a boyfriend who can catch ? and don't get him a cup..

BONUS: Knowing where they are and b) no unpure thoughts after getting whacked without a cup just once.

Daughter has done damage to her current boyfriend by drilling him in the forehead and chest area (two seperate occasions). Forehead shot brought two stitches. He is Mr.Baseball player whom he thinks he can catch a girl.

Of course daughter feels bad for what happened, but like I told her, if he is dumb enough to keep trying to catch her, then so be it! :D

Philbob - Yes it is getting more of a challenge and risk to catch our daughters now at an older age. This past summer I was pop in the head by my daughter while I missed judged it.
Even though it was my fault I put blame on her saying I wasnt ready and said a couple choice words to myself.

Hillbilly: I laughed so hard I woke Joyce up in another room and it's 5:05 in the morning on Sunday.

Boys: " I can catch a girl" mental attitude...lol

The reason I laugh is because this year I was umpiring and the coaches was rushing around trying to help the catcher get ready and a parent stepped into the dugout... grabbed the catcher's mitt.. told the coaches "I'll warm her up" and the first pitch hit him square in the chest and knocked him down.... Never seen him try that again the rest of the tournament.

I've taken some shots over the years... and even the face mask it'll ring your bell.. especially at 51 years of age...

Maybe someone on the forum has an extra game face because their dd shelved it for the Rip-It mask.......

Gentleman, buckets are overrated. Sitting on a bucket puts your manhood on a platter, makes you complacent, and makes it very tough to move into a good receiving position for an errant pitch. You're just asking to get hurt.

When I catch for a pitcher I go full commando...no bucket, cup, or mask. It's like living on the edge.......although admittedly I should wear a mask and cup.

I believe Rip It makes an adult defensive face mask. I know they had them in Hilliard at Play it again Sports.

About three weeks ago I had a Hip Replacement (at a young age of 45), really ****s. At this point the two catchers on our team has been catching for my DD. It's working out great; Saturday was the first day I was able to go, and it's nice because you can see a lot more with the pitching and help her out, but not too much, because you know how the parents are usually wrong according to our DD. :) Anyhow, I would like to keep it this way, because it is starting to get a little scarey on the bucket, (I'll admit it), and it also gives the pitcher/catcher to "click". My catchers like to come out so far, so I'll keep it this way as long as I can.

I agree with you all. I get worried on that bucket, when we are indoor the place we pitch has just concrete floor no mat for the catchers so i think the lows ones pick up speed on the bounce.

DD drop ball has taught me the sit sideways on the bucket style and my shins and crotch have thanked me every since. Now her rise has led me to using her ripit as i have had to many skip off the top of my glove and almost take my head off.

fastpitchdadx2, I agree with you, I do the same thing, except in a catchers squat, but sideways is the way to sit for personal "private" protection. lol I will put on a batters helmet also if I need to, to keep from getting stiches, it`s not perfect, but better than nothing.

When My DD first started taking lessons when she was 10, I remember watching those other dads with the older daughters come into the Gillis Facilty wearing shin guards.....I used to think....What a dork!.......My daugter turns 14 this year.....I just want to apologize to all those dads I used to call dorks!

Nothing like a riser to make it a sore day

last year I had a concussion from a ball that ricocheted then one month latter I had my nose broke. I now wear a face mask (ump`s mask) also sit sideways and have went to a 3 gallon dry wall bucket for my seat. This gets me lower to the ground so I can handle the drops.FR

I still like the bucket. However, since I can't see the pitches anyway, I put the bucket over my head for protection. Haven't caught a ball yet but my good looks are preserved!:D
