Please Give Me Your Rec Ball Opinion

MY DD goes to proffesional slapping practice twice weekly. Our school does not have a Junior High team. Ive heard the saying some ball is better than no ball. Would i be doing her a disservice by playing rec ball in league where pitchers are lucky to even get the ball across the plate. And then when she rejoins her select team would it diminish her hitting skills?

Re: Please Give ME UR REC BALL OPINION

if the pitching is that bad, might as well, a good hour of practice on those game days is probably the better way t o go instead of using a sub-par game for practice time (plus, you want the game experience to show off ur practice skills and be proud of her accomplishments and setting goals for the next games)

Putting a talented player with girls that can't play would be very discouraging for the good player. It would be like handing Rembrandt a Barney coloring book and a box of crayolas

Stick with practice. I guarantee she will be bored half way through.

Practice unless she can play up 3-4 years above her age... probably best to stick with well regimented practice. Find a team that will let her practice with them or scrimmage with them.

Yes, She'll learn more if you as a parent take her to the field a couple times a week and hit her ground balls, fly balls, play catch with her to work on throwing mechanics. If your worried about hitting find a place that has a pitching machine to work on slapping. In my opinion that would be best for all girls. (Except Rec. ball pitching practice for pitchers).

Never waste a good players time playing down, especially if the pitching she faces is that bad, she will learn nothing of value. A batting cage would be much more beneficial. There is a world of difference in the pitchers, speed of play and level of play and even attitude between the good travel ball games and normal rec ball. Don`t waste her time.

I would bet that this player lives in a rural setting without a lot of social and playing options. She is a 7th or 8th grader without a junior high program. As a parent you must be aware of the social aspects of the game.

Questions I would like to ask?
1. Are her friends playing rec?
2. Will she be ostracized in her school if she abandons her friends playing rec? (she can be isolated and shunned)
3. Do you have any facilities where you can actually practice? (working out in the side-yard while her friends have uniforms and PLAY on fields isn't going to cut it)
4. Are you as a parent knowledgeable about softball and especially the technical skill of slapping? (not everyone has the ability to be a great coach, Know your limitations)
5. Are there any knowledgeable coaches in the rec league that can train her.(an old baseball guy or a young ex-softball player may just be ticket)
6. Can she learn other skills, like fielding or throwing? (make the best of the situation)
7. What will make her happy? (How many times do you see this question asked on this forum?)

You also must not let softball become a JOB. You will burn her out and the next thing you know she will be showing you her tats and introducing you to Snake. So be very careful that softball does not become something you have serious conflict over. There is a time and place for everything. Sometimes hanging out with her friends is much more important that one more drill.

My question would be can you play up? My DD at 12U played up on a 15U Rec, which was made up of high school players and pitchers. Then she played up at 18U. Good Live pitching .

Our Middle School doesn't have a Sb program either. So a few years ago a parent put together his own league. He contacted other schools in the county and others nearby and gave them the opportunity to put a team together - most of which also did not have a MS team either - to be in this league. There are now 9 teams in our league, they play only on Sundays (DHs), start practices indoors in March, and play only till mid May - so it doesn't interfere with the other Sb teams they are on.

This works out well, especially for our rural area and the fact that its not school sanctioned - no other governing bodies controlling them. Its also nice since they will be seeing these same girls in HS ball.

I had the same issues last year. My daughter listed as a 12U, played in the 13U-15U "A" division of our local Rec League. Now, I am not saying she is all that and a bag of chips. But she was better than all the girls on her team. She was the catcher for her rec team, and lead off slapper. She was by far the fastest girl on the field MOST of the time.

Her Rec ball coach was one of the Asst. HS Coaches, he picked the team up, out of courtesy due to over flow numbers of girls that signed up. They moved my DD onto his team to help them out as they only had 8 on the roster. She made #9

At the first game the young lady on first, pulled my DD aside and said... "Your the best one on the team, you make sure to tell us where to throw the ball." I felt bad, for my DD at the age of 12 she was placed in that situation. But it also showed the respect they had for her years of expierence.

Sure she was frustrated sometimes. And had a lot of walks, and stolen bases but most of all she really helped a lot of girls, she worked with them on off days, just her and 3 or 4 of the girls, I took the trailer up, with my Club ball practice stuff and they just hit grounders, pop up etc... she played a huge role in helping them, and it showed at the end of the season. Over the course of spring, summer Rec, and Travel Ball, my DD played in 80 games and loved EVERY MINUTE of it. She has asked if she can play again... I just might let her.

If she can move up, then move up. If not practice. My 10dd plays with 14u girls in rec (with her big sister), and she is better than half of them.
