Pitching and Pitchers Discussion Anyone ever had a pitcher that wanted to also throw shot and disc?

High School athlete. Wants to do both. Had track/softball kids before but never a pitcher who was a thrower. Anyone ever had one? Any problems with mechanics or arm fatigue?

My niece and nephew both throw Javelin and shot for Texas A & M. My sister has been begging me to bring my dd down there because fastpitch softball pitchers are usually exceptional at both of those events. Any truth to that? I don't know. ;&

Has to be tough to balance both sports during the high school season.

Had a 3B who did both of these track events as well, when we didn't have a game. Have to admit that she had a strong arm but had a problem with her throws all year on the softball field.

I know of a pitcher that tryed to do both but the seasons overlap and she was continually torn by the two coaches. I also do not think that the motions are similar. By her senior year she was no longer pitching and then was forced to pick a sport.

If you are a pitcher I would be very careful; especially if Softball is your main event.

Oldest DD does both--actually a lot of the actual body mechanics are the same. The only thing that has been screwed up is her softball overhand throwing. She tends to only flick from the elbow and not follow through well. I like the overall strengthening regimen she has for track, I figure it should help her for softball as well. MAY have problem this year with overlapping District dates for softball and track.....

Oldest DD was a pole vaulter... Prior to that, I thought that a pole vault was a polish bank. Never really knew too much about track and field.

The motion and the certainly the muscles are not the same. A softball pitcher needs to have the quick twitch muscles developed. The pitch is a downward snap of the arm and wrist. The discus is a spinning motion and involves more full body. On top of that the disc is very heavy and they will develop muscles that can lift it and throw it. This is not a pitching motion and will eventually slow down the arm wrist snap.

Throwing shot and disc, should not have any ill effects on a pitchers pitching, Both shot and disc, develop fast twitch muscle fibers which can only help a pitcher, speed and explosive power, is just what we want out of a pitchers stride.
The shot is a hard drive of the legs, with the power coming from the speed of the stride across the circle and the hip rotation, the arm is just a fulcrum to push the shot. The same is true of the disc, the throw comes from the speed of the rotation, the push off the leg, and the arm whip, which is led by the hips , much like batting. the arm is again the fulcrum that holds the disc, that is all it really does.
There is an explosive wrist snap involved in the shot that really only putters know about.
As far as juggling two sports , thats up to your school.
Shot and disc will only make a pitchers stride more powerful, it will do nothing to hurt her speed ,control or mechanics, and will certainly not hurt her wrist snap. If anything it would give her better body awarness, and an understanding of where power and speed are generated in her pitching motion.
