I coach in HS and our season begins with freezing temperatures. I am usually on the field shaking from freezing. Underarmor and thermal underwear aren't working...I think I will try a long swimmer's parka and embroider Fastpitch on the back! If anyone has other ideas I would love to hear them!

I keep a big stock of those shake and heat hand warmers. One in each pocket does wonders. Layers, layers, layers!!! That's the only way to keep warm, layer on the clothes.

I was working outdoors along the Ohio river a couple winters ago. Those hand warmers Klump mentioned saved my butt during the 10-12 hours outside. You can get them at Wal-Mart pretty cheap, and they last a couple hours each.

DD would keep a couple of the chemical warmers in her waistband while pitching HS - sometimes in snow. Great to warm the fingertips/hands.

Those things are a lot more convenient than the lighter fluid based hand warmers we use to use while hunting - although those worked quite well.

And since we are talking about it here is something for the parents. Cold, windy, and rainy days watching highschool softball, you will want this. I have 2 one for me and one for the love of my life, the WIFE.

If you can find them online anywhere as I don't think they are made anymore. ChillBuster 12 volt battery operated blanket. Charge lasts about 1.5 hrs and the blanket has a vinyl outer layer that repels water. have it about 3 yrs now, but don't see them online anymore. Got it at Sports Authority for about 40 bucks in camping dept. Battery replaced last year for about $30 is about 4" x 8"

Maybe Amazon.com has a place with some on shelves...

heck these might work with the 12 volt battery and socket adapter...

The Mrs bought me some flannel-lined jeans several years ago. They work great when combined w/thermal underwear. They've gotten me thru many hs football playoff games and early spring softball games.

Alot of good thoughts here. I like layers. As a hunter i can tell you what works for me is to start with cotton with first layer to helb absorb moisture ( sweat ) cause we actually still do that when its cold, followed by wool. But im so excited to go outdoors to watch some softball. It has been a long cold winter. Bring on the elements im ready for em. LETS PLAY BALL!!!!

If your feet get cold try this trick. Buy a powder based stick deodorant like arm and hammer. Rub it all over your feet making sure you get in between toes. I worked outside in the winter time building houses and this worked great. People do not realize your feet get cold because they sweat and if you eliminate the sweating they stay warmer longer. Has to be a powder based stick though and not a spray.
