There are no words for this story except - sportsmanship.

It's wonderful sportmanship on the part of the other team but, unfortunately, a great big blown call by the umpires. :(

The rules allow a substitute to replace the injured runner and complete the base award. The umpires denied the offensive team's coach that opportunity. Their misinterpretation of the rules led to a possible serious injury being made worse by jostling the injured player around the bases.

Yes, this is based on a true story. Yes, the losing team's players obviously were good sports. The real-life unhappy ending was that the umpires in the actual game were later reprimanded by the NCAA for failing to allow a sub for the runner.

When I saw this clip on YouTube last year, I thought it was a bad call, but never took the time/forgot to look it up. Thanks for the confirmation. Still a good story.

Thanks for the ruling Bretman. It's nice to see ThunderD appreciates your contributions too.
BTW, did you and your buddies ever settle that little hop no hop recruiting video thread?

I don't think that anything ever actually got "settled". All I could do was offer the interpretations as they have been presented to me (over and over again).

Frankly, I was kind of glad to drop it! But I have a feeling that thread might raise its ugly head again. One of the posters that disagreed with me has been posting the video on other internet forums, apparently shopping for a "second opinion".

Bretman -- Judging by what I know about from reading your responses on OFC, I recognize you as a dedicated professional who tries to umpire to the best of your ability. I have gained much insight from reading your OFC remarks. I think while we non-umpire OFC'ers have the freedom to make assumptions, grand pronouncements, to shoot from the hip on issues, gentlemen like yourself tend to hold yourself to a much stricter standard. Like every fastpitch parent, there are times when I will disagree. Like I've told the girls on the teams I've coached, "You're here to play, umpires are here to umpire. You do your job and letbthem do theirs." Thanks for being here and on the field.

Hey Phil, watch your nose, you got a little something on there....j/k :lmao:

I think that thread was interesting and informative on many levels (albeit repetative). I have to say I was impressed that Bretman answered every question/arguement that was posed in a professional, well thought out manner. He never waivered from his position, just like a professional umpire must do on the field to command respect and to keep the game from getting away from him. OFC and this sport are lucky to have a resource like him. It's just too bad about his eyes...:lmao:

Maybe, I guess I was just feeling a little philisophical. I did a fair amount of umpiring in my younger days. It was fun, and enlightening, in regards to coaches and parents.
