Mind your own business rec ball coach!

About Three months ago the local Rec ball coach approached my 12u soon to be 13 year old DD to say the following.

"Why don't you quit travel ball and come play with your friends"

This for sure made my head EXPLODE!

Why?
My DD is with a new travel ball team, that she doesn't know anyone yet. She is soon to be turning 13 and facing many changes and popularity contests. That might sound like a good idea to a girl her age, but I know she is best off where she is. It is obvious to me that this is a coach that is in it for all the wrong reasons.

What do you think, and has this happened to you?

Was threatened last fall by the rec director of softball who also coaches the middle school team that if DD continued playing travel ball she might not make the middle school team.

How do you like that? Her exact words were "I'm not saying she won't make the team, but you guys (wife and I) need to think about that?"

Talk about your head exploding. My dd will play 70 quality games this season versus 20 or so with a team with half the players that can't put a glove on the correct hand - but hey she might not be good enough for the middle school team.

All that aside I am a firm believer that these kids forge strong friendships with their travel teammates. They still see their local friends at school, in the neighborhood or at other functions. This coach was out of line talking directly to your daughter about it however and I would tell him so.

Heaven forbid a coach tries to recruit a kid that can make the team better. Would it be any different than a small town private college coach saying, "Why go play somewhere far from home when you could play here in front of mom & dad?"

Now this one is just stupid on the ms coach's part.

Trust me, that's tip of the iceberg. Did someone ask in an earlier thread if MS ball was political?

SVOP1621 didn't mean to hi-jack you. I don't think this coach should have approached your daughter directly. If your daughter is on the shy side and nervous about fitting in with the new players I can see this causing some doubts in her mind about whether it was the right decision. If he wanted to recruit her, it should be through the parents - and I would apply this to any coach rec or travel.

The rec ball coach in our town had only 6 girls sign up to play. We have 4 girls in town who play travel ball. He flat out told them that he doesnt want travel ball players because they miss too many practices because of it. Go figure. Heres a guy that doesnt even have enough players for a team. Go figure.

REC ball coaches shouldnt be recruiting anyone. What is the point it is rec ball where everyone has a great time and winning doesnt matter.

As a middle school coach, I personally encourage my girls to play travel ball. The more experience and coaching they get, the better off they are, and the better off I am, i don`t have to teach as much of the basics when they have that kind of experience. The coach who insinuated they would not take the travel ball player is out of thier mind. At the same time, the girls and travel ball coaches should work with school coaches as far as practices and such, ( and I can say none of my girls or thier coaches have given us any issues, I know in some cases it happens ), after all, the school ball season is realatively short.

It would seem that the MS school coaches that sparked this thread proved that there are still many among the populace are choose to remain clueless. Some by choice.

In our town, the travel team is nothing more than a glorified rec team. Tournament ball is where it is at. When my dd played travel and tournament in the same season, the travel coach could not accept that my dd's priorities were with the tournament team. Actually he was quite the baby about it. I am a firm believer that you play up to your competition and if you want to get better, you have to compete against the best. Since we have left "travel" ball and soley play tournament ball, there isn't one girl in the local travel program that could carry my daughters bat bag. Stick with the tournament team. If your rec coach is understanding of your committment to the tourney team, he will gladly accept your dd to better his team and have fun. As far as the MS coach, well, there are an awful lot of college scouts at various tournaments and there probably isn't as much politics on tourney teams either.

My point exactly. Why put you DD BACK into something she worked hard to get away from ? Some daddy or mommy came up with halfwit type of Middle school ball so their kid could play. Then to top it off to even think that it is "prestige" to do so. Clueless.

If all the kids on the team are from the same town it probably isn't a true travel team. I call those feeder programs for the local school on a par with All-Star rec. The director of softball / MS coach I mentioned earlier is also a 10U rec coach.

To me doesnt matter whether it's REC - MS - Or Travel if you know that DD is signed and commited to a rostered team. Its HANDS OFF period. But what fairy tale am i living in???

How many girls started right off in travel ball? No rec ball or intramural league, just straight in travel ball??????

You have to start somewhere.

Many moons ago, I was clueless about travel. My dd was a little bit of a stand out in rec and someone mentioned I should give travel a shot. This was back her first year of 10U. I wouldn't hear of anything to do with travel. It sounded expensive and way too time consuming. Second year of 10U, she was asked to play on an all star team that went to a tournament with travel ball teams. That is what opened my eyes. I thought our little all star team was a great team, until a travel team schooled us. When we left the field, dd said she wanted to be able to play ball like that. Travel is a whole different world than rec. Now that we are full blown travel addicts, I still remember the time I was...well...ignorant for lack of a better word...about travel. It's kind of hard to believe that sometimes there are people out there that don't appreciate travel like those of us that do, there are people out there that just don't understand. I tried to coax a friend out of rec last year with no luck. It's possible the people that make such comments as "travel is a waste of time", really just don't get it. So when someone says that to me, or something along those lines, I just forgive them for not knowing and feel sorry for them for not getting to experience it...lol :)
