dd played on a team were the girls played rec. throughout the course of the year you could see the skills begin to diminish. parents would always say how well their daughter hit or my dd struck out 20 batters. get them into a travel game and you could see how geared they were to the rec ball mentality. eveyone said how good this rec league was(emerald necklace). if you want to play rec then stay there. if you want to play 'a' ball travel then stay with that.

Wouldn't everyone here agree that the younger girls (8, 10, 12) would benefit from playing rec. ball along with travel ball? Personally I think at the younger ages, all the time one can spend on the field playing is a benefit.

Regardless of whether or not the competition is "on par" with travel ball, young players can always get something out of just playing ball.

that sounds good for 8u maybe even 10u. but most rec ball coaches don't haveaclue. better to start at travel ball were they will get good coaching.

My 7 year old plays 8U rec ball and 10U travel ball. I am not a fan of rec, but she is young enough that she just needs the repititions. My 11 year old refuses to play rec (thank God!!!). Travel ball comes first though.

I agree with that 100%, most kids best coaches are their parents, 1 on 1 out of team activities. I know it did wonders for my DD and most of the kids she grew up playing against, many of them are going to play college ball. My oldest is in 18u, my middle DD is a first year 10u, she plays for a travel team and plays rec. Ball, the more reps the better is my opinion. She will continue down that path as long as she wants to.

I also feel its important to play with kids your going to play high school ball with.

I should add every rec. Ball coach my oldest has had, were as knowledgeable as most travel coaches. A few were travel coaches and the other ones were former travel players, who were also coaching on a high school staff, one of her rec ball coaches is the head ump. In our area. So I haven't been in a position were my kid was playing for somebody who didn't know anything. ...well until this year I'm the rec coach and an assistant on her travel team..lol

Ya? If you ever saw her play you wouldn't be so confused. I don't do the dragging, she does, she LOVES fastpitch!! Gets it from her sisters.

The confusion comes from playing her down in rec. Ball.

I know that many rec organizations do not allow a child to play up 2 to 3 years. They claim it is a liability issue, even though the parents are willing to sign a waiver. Maybe that is why.....

Lenski's right, they won't let her go too far ahead. She's been in 8U since she was 5.

Yea that's no good, my DD, can also play 8u buts she's playing 10's in both travel and rec., my oldest always played up an age bracket or 2. Makes a difference.

I agree, it makes a huge difference!! She hits off 10 year old travel pitchers, but has to have the coach pitch to her in rec. We work with her ALOT so she won't go backwards. She is still having fun so we go with the flow, we're just trying to keep her playing. :)

The Emerald Necklace league is not a rec. league. It would be considered like all-star travel as each city has the best from their city, with many players playing on tournament teams on the weekend. There are also at least three different levels at each age group. Maybe your DD was in a C or D level, which can be very much like rec. ball, but I don't care what age group you are playing, if your DD is on an A or B team, it is certainly NOT rec. ball.

I could not agree more. This is why so many teams do not want to play in the "A" Division. All the teams in "A" Division are the teams that also do alot of tournaments. Our Teams are playing in 7 tournaments each this year plus Emerald Necklace. Emerald Necklace gives the girls an extra 16 games on average to play in the summer.

well sounds like they had a bad coach then for the Emerald Necklace team..There are good coaches, great coaches, bad coaches and coaches that should not be coaching in Rec leagues, The Emerald Necklace League and even in Tournament Ball Teams...I guess thats the nature of sports...

What Parma has said and what I have witnessed over the last three years is that the A and B divisions are not mostly weak teams. In fact, the A division teams either stay together to play 5-7 tournaments or have 75% or more of their players on tournament teams. The B division is not too far off of that. Unlike most leagues, each age division has a committee that reviews team applications to make sure like teams are in the same division to make things as competitive as possible. I would venture to say that many/most of the girls in western/southern Cuyahoga county that play tournament, play emerald during the week.
