This was the biggest fear as my DD pitched for only 4 years, Now she is done and I do not have to worry about it, she never wanted to wear the mask ..she thought it was "ugly" I have seen more game face masks this spring than ever... I hope more start wearing them. This is a scary situation for anyone to be a part off. My thoughts and prayer are out to the family...

I am very haappy to hear this young lady seems like she will be fine. I would like to take this moment and beg any parent to make their DD wear a mask. Please do not give them the choice!!

Glad to hear the optomistic outcome for this young lady.
My DD pitcher has worn a game face since 10U, when she started getting serious about pitching. It was never an option. It was and still is a requirement and will be for as long as I have an influence in her game play.
We witnessed a very similiar injury to the one discussed in this post, and that is something I never want to have my DD go thru. The older the players get, I believe the more necessary the game faces are and am amazed when we faced other middle schools that didn't have even one player wearing a game face. I dont' get it!

We will continue to keep here in our prayers. And wish her a speedy recovery!
These type of injuries prove how important a face mask is.

God is good!!! So happy to hear she will be okay!

My dd is a freshman and has worn a mask since she was eleven and will continue to. This year alone she has been hit twice with line drives. One to her hip and one to her thigh. The importance of a mask is not lost on her at all! She has told me that unless things change she may be the first one to wear a mask in college! Cool with me!!

That's fantastic she came out of it OK, hoping for a full recovery. It can be a dangerous game no matter what.

I cringe every time one goes whistling through the circle. Older DD never got used to wearing one. So far, she's always been quick enough to defend herself but have seen some shots get close in college. I didn't give the younger one the option, she was able to start from day 1 wearing a mask.

A handful of pitchers wear a mask in college, but not too many. I would expect it to be more common as the younger ones get there that have been wearing them all along. Practical masks are relatively new to the game still.

Jamie is home and doing well, considering what she has been through. In fact, she hopes to go watch her teammates play their final MS game today. She is a very special young lady and the prognosis looks good.

Special thanks to the Springboro coach and parents who have been so supportive during this difficult time. You guys are very classy and all of us in Brookville thank you for your prayers, calls, and emails regarding Jamie's condition.

Thanks to everyone in the softball community for their support and prayers. This is a very special group of softball people in the Dayton area and we appreciate your support very much.

Great to hear that dd has come out of this in the best possible way. Praise God.

NOTE: This is the 2nd pitcher that I'm aware of in Cincy/Dayton region in three months that's taken one to the face. HITTING instruction is being taught at a much greater quality and pace then ever before which means the # of line drives back at the pitcher is increasing and will continue to increase as our OH dds continue to learn how to hit at the highest levels from the best instructers in the country.

WEARING A FACEMASK SHOULD NO LONGER BE AN OPTION, EVEN IF IT ISN'T A RULE, WHY ARE PARENTS AND COACHES LETTING THEIR KIDS TAKE THE MOUND WITHOUT THEM. STOP THE MADNESS NOW BEFORE THE NEXT OUTCOME IS NOT SO GLORIOUS.

This was sent to all Ohio Hawks parents this evening following our coaches meeting.

May 11, 2010

In the interest of our players safety, the Hawks board and coaches have discussed and the board voted to require all 10u and 12u infielders to wear full face protection during games/scrimmages that have a live pitcher and hitter involved.

We can get rip-it masks for $35/Youth and $40/Adult for any player requiring them. This new rule will go into force June 1st to give parents time to get their DD a suitable mask.

We STRONGLY encourage all ages - 14u and up to wear face protection and there is a very high probability that we will require it at all upper ages for our pitchers, 1st and 3rd base players next season.

If you have any questions please see your coach or contact me directly.

Great - and the kids will get used to it early on. Our HS pitcher wears hers all the time now because her travel team requires it. Makes it easy!!

I'm glad to hear this young lady is doing well.

My dd plays short. Last year her travel coach required all infield positions to wear a facemask, so we went out and bought one. Later during the season one of our girls hit one that got the 2nd baseman in the face. That's a sound & sight that I'll never forget. And I was so glad, our coach had the the foresight to require it of our team. It's not just the girl that gets hit that's affected, but all the other players & fans that witness it. Please don't give your daughter a choice, make her wear one!

Exactly..Why risk it? I understand that most of us played ball with no protection available (except for catchers). Is that a good reason to not protect your child? It blows me away that people wouldn't protect their kids when perfectly good saftey equipment is available these days. I have read posts that say this is teaching your kid to play scared. I completely disagree. I think it gives them much more confidence knowing they cant have their teeth knocked out, or their face re-arranged. Each year the bats get better and better; increasing the chance of injury for fielders (specificaly pitchers). Please wake up people!

As my DH pointed out last night - college girls don't wear them. Aren't they just as likely to get hit?

You would like to think that the reactions and experience of the average college player is higher than the average pre-college player. However the hitters are also better, etc. etc.

It would be interesting to see numbers at the various levels but I don't think they exist.

My daughter wears one and hopefully others will as well.
