Pitching and Pitchers Discussion 16-U still at 40 feet??

Attended a USSSA qualifying tournament this weekend, and was surprised/disappointed to find out that they were playing 16-U at 40 feet. Was told that was still an option (verified this in USSSA rule book), and supposedly that's what state organization gave them for rules. Are other tournaments doing this as well? Also was disappointed that all pool games had 1 ump, which I think just isn't right at the 16-U level. When I suggested to the TD that they get 2 umps in the future and raise team fees a little, I was told not to come back in the future if I didn't like the way they did things ... so I won't ... but just curious if other 16-U teams are seeing this?

I am surprised- I thought USSSA were the first sanction to announce that they were moving 16u to 43ft and didn't realize that they left 40 ft as an option. I believe all NSA are at 43 ft and I thought ASA was as well. I am surprised by that ASA tournament using 40 ft.

I thought so too ... but apparently allowed for a 2 year option. Can't believe their nationals would still be at 40 but who knows.

I can't believe with all the tournaments being cancelled that a TD would be such a knob to a coach like that over a suggestion. I know we welcome suggestions to make our tournament better every year. I bet he will have a hard time filling his tournament after a while, organization and quality are VERY important to keep teams coming back year after year. If you are telling the ones that do sign up to like it or leave, most will leave. Word of mouth is a killer!!

The ASA Cinderella Classic (July 16-18), 16u and 18u will be pitching from 43'. Any tournament that wants to do right by the girls needs to make the move to 43', that's what they'll be throwing from come HS season. Sad Sad Sad

The really funny thing is that we were playing the TD's team at the time I suggested they get 2 umps in the future. A couple of innings later, one of our girls tried to check her swing with 2 strikes and clearly went around from my 3rd base coaching position. The umpire didn't see it and had no one to appeal to, and the TD and his coaching staff were all up in arms, and I raised my arms and laughingly yelled "hey, get two umpires in the future" and he yelled back a second time "hey, don't come back in the future". I actually thought it was all funny, but then some say I have a weird sense of humor! But I definitely won't be back next year, and will be sure to relay his message to the rest of my organization.

A little off track from my original post I guess ... it was the 40' thing that really threw me. I had read here on OFC back in the spring that everyone had gone over to 43' and had told my girls they would never see 40' again, but I obviously was wrong! Is anyone outside of Northeast Ohio seeing any 40'?

We played 43' all weekend for 16s at our tournament. Didn't think it was an option and even if it was we still would have ran at 43'. We will run 43' for the 14s at our fall tournament too. Might as well get them ready.

I was told that all USSSA and NSA 16U and up would be 43 ft. but here is what I was quoted by the ASA commissioner..."Pitching distance for 16 & 18U is 43 ft. If it’s an invitational they can use whatever distance they want. If it’s a National Qualifying tournament it has to be 43ft". My DD 16U team is in Zanesville for 4th of July and they are at 40 ft. I think they are the only tournament we're doing this year that is keeping 16U at 40 ft.

If I didn't know better, I might think that was a hijack, Doug! ;)
