what is the cost of a S O C C E R tournament and how much is umpire/official pay, and how many teams usually attend in each division?

A cube mate of mine has a DD who is on an elite Socker team. She has a full ride to Indiana to play said activity. They are at a big tournament this week in Beavercreek somewhere. The format is similar to the worldcup format. They have three pool games and they must "make it out of their pool" to advance to the "knockout" round (i.e. single elimination). I ask if he was fine with that format and he looked at me like, "Is there any other way??" With as much grief as TDs get for softball formats, what would the sentiment be like if someone posted a tournament on here with that format. I guess the Gold/Silver/Bronze format that Beavercreek uses would be the closest but I don't know any tournament that sends teams home if they don't make it out of their pool. Socker folks are 100% cool with this fact of life.

The idea here was eliminating teams right out of pool play, right? Travel/Tournament basketball worked the same way. You didn't come back Sunday (unless you had a 3rd pool game Sunday morning) if you didn't win at least 2 games in pool play. That didn't even get you a guarantee. I suppose for the better teams, getting a good pairing is ideal. For those still learning and trying to improve, they miss out on the playing time and the improved competition from bracket play. My DD's would rather be playing. I think knowing you play with your teammates throughout the weekend is part of what they love about tournament ball, win or lose. Besides, there's got to be a few out there who didn't play their best on Saturday and won it all on Sunday. You'll always have your select tournaments for the best competition. Try to pare it down too much and someone who isn't used to losing is going home early and unhappy anyway. Just my humble view looking uphill more than from the top.

Socker folks don't know any better so they are happy. I like having a loser bracket with the opportunity to work your way back up to the championship game. In 2008 Cincy Static Black did it at Heat-In Up. Don't remember how many games on Sunday, it was taking the hard way but what a sweet victory. I think it is a better reflection of who the better team is on any given weekend and kinda softens the luck of the draw.

I have done double elim with teams that go 0-2 and 1-2 entered into another elimination event-- I really like it. This format seems to do a good job of separating stonger and weaker.

I really like the way $okker does it. My other DD plays elite $occer and even the showcase tournaments do it this way. They are broken into pools of 4 and typically the top 2 in each pool move up into semi's. All games have meaning, so the teams work their hardest in every game. There are no throwing games to try to get a preferred team in elimination games. They even play this way at the best tournaments like STATE CUP where all the teams are strong and trying to acheive the state title.

Often times, teams can choose to play in Gold or Sliver play kind of like entering A or B divisions in tourneys. It helps keep the talent kind of clustered together. Sometimes you have the trophy hunters in the Silver division, but it does not happen often since it is no fun.

The best part is that there are NO GATE FEES at $okker tournaments!

I have seen softball tournaments in Toledo use a similar format at the Fastpich Classics series run by Mark Tooman. It seems to work well.
Fastpitch Classics

I think that they also did something similar at the Farley Memorial tournament (ASA FAST Wizards) this year where only the top seed in each pool moved on.

I am not sure what official pay is. However, here is an example of our tournament. Entry fee is a bit higher than a Softball tourney $450 - $550 depending on age group, but not that much more. I figured out player fees + gate fees for softball vs player fees with no gate fees for $okker and it was about the same.

Last year, we had about 100 teams, both boys and girls teams were included. So if you only have girls, then it would be about 50-60 teams which is about the same as a softball tourney.

Pacesetter $okker Club <----- Geez OFC even blocks the link!

The trouble is.. when an out of town team is out of it on Saturday... they have motel rooms for Saturday night and for the out of town teams... it's not worth coming to if they have a chance at leaving on Saturday and not playing on Sunday.

I see many parents who forked out motel money with faces looking like this...

MUSTY, I love the loser bracket too. Simply would like to see some process in which 1-8 seeds aren't playing the 18-26 seeds for two rounds in bracket play before a meaningful/challenging game occurrs. I especially hate seeing kids getting injured in these lop sided blow outs as "WIERD" stuff seems to always happen in these types of games.

Every one that I have been to have pre-arrangements with the tournament director to hold rooms for teams incase they advance. You check out Saturday afternoon then, if you advane, the hotel guarantees to house the team. Teams are, however, required to use tournament arranged hotels.

Guess it depends which side of the fence you are on. From a TD pov you give a 5 gg, get lots of teams to enter and use lots of venues and umpires. Everyone gets the gg in Fri and Sat. Come Sunday you have less overhead (less venues, less umpires) AND if it rains - less refunds...cha-ching!

as for the pre-arranged hotels, if you have a complex large enough, just look at Compuware

I believe a couple of years ago, Slammers lost their first bracket game and then followed that with a win or 2 on Saturday and then won 8 on Sunday to take GAPSS.

More cha-ching - the organization gets kickbacks from the hotels.

Typically with 1 loss you get into the semi's. It is when you lose your first 2 games out of 3, the team is out of contention. Once we went 1-1-1 and the way it worked out (3 pools), we got the wild card promotion to the semi's.

We played in two ASA-sanctioned tournaments our first year (2003) that only sent the top half to bracket play. Also, went to Aunt Rosie's the second year and it was the same format.

Does anyone know if that was normal or not back then?
