After a week of scrimmages (starting Friday), Westerville North will head to Myrtle Beach to work out the kinks before starting OCC play. The Warriors will have games against some strong opponents. On the schedule:

Massillon Jackson (OH) - last year's Ohio Division I state champions, who crushed Grove City 10-0 in the finals.

Antioch Lakes (IL) - The Division III third-place finisher in Illinois last year, returning players hit a total of 20 home runs in 36 games (the team total was 48).

Walsh Jesuit (OH) - A two-time Division II District finalist out of the Akron area.

Hamilton Ross (OH) - District finalists in Division II last year.

Then - back to Ohio to start the OCC season.

Good luck in Myrtle Beach! :)

Freshman have enough on their plate when the make varsity at a DI school without Dad bragging or more likely pushing them too hard (in my case). I am happy that she has reached one of her goals. Have always encouraged my kids to set goals and then when they reach them, set higher or different goals. fyi - my dd and one other (Lucas) made varsity. Should be a fun year - all starts next week!

Congratulations to both girls on making varsity! Chris, i know little Murph, but don't know your D.D. What is her number (if you don't mind me asking) so I know who to cheer for.

We all knew lil Murph would make and I'm happy for her.Mine is #11 OF/Slapper.Actually she was the pitcher for Ridgeview in the 2009 season in 7th grade(15-1 as pitcher, that was rough with my team handing her her only loss).I coached 7th @ Lakeview that year and handed Ridgeview thier ONLY 2 losses. Both freshman classes at North and Central are loaded with talent! Both freshman classes only lost 4 games over the past 2 years!

Watch that 8th grade class at Ridgeview-loaded with athletes! No disrepect to my schools 8th grade but Ridgeview is stacked!(Gotta give credit when credit is due).

Interesting stat-I believe Central is 19-5(not including scrimmages) from 7th to Varsity over the past 2 years!See if we cant even it up this year but I root for both teams, all games but 2!

GO PICKERINGTON!

Since D.D. has been gone two years now, I just root for all of the girls from both teams, even when they play each other! I don't have a girl in the mix so I can say "I" am Pickerington. LOL. Good to hear we have up coming players, you know we are known for reloading.

GO PICKERINGTON!

The old Licking County League I believe would be a better fit for Watkins. Attendance would be better at games played at closer venues, Given the choice how many fans actually travel to Hilliard, Mt Vernon or Franklin Hts from the Pataskala area to watch a game compared to traveling the much shorter distance to Granville, Newark or Johnstown if the LCL is reformed? Being in a new LCL has to help. Plus the old rivalries should help spark interest and attendance. The question I have after reading the above mentioned article is where does Lakewood stand on the new LCL? They were always a part of that league. Having that softball program in a league with Watkins would be great, they have it going on from 8U and up which is what it takes to win state titles.

The This Week newspapers profiled the vast majority of the OCC softball teams in their current issues, which are available on their website.

Of course, the pre-season press is always optimistic, but reading up on the teams can give you some insights.

Based on the readings - and watching the first week of play - I may revise my predictions for the OCC Cardinal division.

Is anyone picking up the challenge of pontificating on the other divisions?

Haven't seen very many OCC scores this week...are there any great matchups over the next few days?

Lee:

I posted a bunch of scores from the Dispatch on the 3-29-11 results thread.

I've just been tracking the schedules for BHeat 95 players and I'm not seeing any OCC matchups until the Apr 6 Delaware/Mount Vernon game.

Carol. Lyons played for the 94's. Glad to see her and Jess both had good games. It will be fun playing them.

Dan:

Abby Lyons and her family are top notch. Looking forward to seeing them on April 4 at the MV home opener against Olentangy Orange.

Seeing that our games were canceled Saturday due to the weather, I traveled out to Lakewood to watch some outstanding games. In the first game Groveport downed Lakewood 4-3 and in the second game Tri Valley edged Groveport 1-0 in 10 innings. Ali Smith picked up the win pitching a complete game shutout, and Emma Johnson was dominate in a losing effort with 25 Ks. One of the best games I've seen in awhile.

25 K's nice, would need more fingers and toes to track that one!

I can't remember from prior years: at some point will the Dispatch start publishing League standings? Because the OCC web site is not doing that now and it's not clear to me when or if they will start posting these standings. With so many teams now in each division (yes, I know, I'm dating myself), it's a struggle to try on my own to keep track.

Pick Central over Pick North 6-4 in 11 innings - great game of emotional highs and lows. Lots of great plays and big hits and plenty of opportunity for each team to win. Keep your heads up North - it is a long season! Proud of the effort by both sides.
