Can someone please explain to me how the assistant varsity softball coach was allowed to coach his high school team over the winter? I know about the 4 player rule but he coached his whole team during indoor tournaments.

In addition, he took his HIGH SCHOOL team to play in an indoor tournament on February 19th - which was AFTER the last day they could play indoor but he registered them under the name of Ohio Edge. He claimed to be a volunteer coach but it doesn't matter. A coach is a coach whether he or she is paid or not.

This put his team at an advantage over the other schools in the GWOC.

If OHSAA doesn't do anything then this sets a precedent for other schools to violate the rules because nothing will be done about it.

Grasshopper...Come close...

A lot of outsiders think those that are seen around a school are paid for their services...Some are and some are not.. There are many behind the scenes that are...and those in front of the public that are not....
I know of several GMC/GWOC teams that played fall and winter events and have been doing it for years...

Does it help.. Hell yes it dose.. Is it Illegal NO.... I would take 20 ladies from our HS to play in Fall and winter events. We even played in a fall league and attended a couple Sinclair events, then turn them over to the coach in Feb. Just because you see someone helping out...or around a team does not mean they are a paid coach...If they end up being a paid coach yes then you may have issues...

According to this is doesn't matter if they are paid or a volunteer.

Trust Me...The power teams in the GWOC and GMC play in the fall and winter... I coached our HS ladies from 2009-2014 in the fall/winter as a parent volunteer no "official" title/ contract.
Now, If YOU know of a team that is playing and being coached by a paid coach by their district you need to report it.
If you are guessing or assuming you may be better off leaving well enough alone... Put up or shut up as many would say.... So lets here who YOU are calling out....

So, you are saying that in your previous post you conclude that there was some sort of shady deal going down with a HS team and coaches but, your second post states you have no idea who the coaches are? Something doesn't smell right...I would call out the PEOPLE spreading rumors so they may be put out on the web o justify their claims...JMHO...

CARDS, I am not the original poster of this thread, not sure which previous post you are referring to, I am not the one calling anyone out, I just chimed in with what the OHSAA rules say since you posted that it only applies to paid coaches.

Don't know the people or the situation, but do know a high school coach can not coach more than 4 players on a winter team, whether they are a paid or volunteer coach.

If you look at rule 2.21 it's a limit of four players from same school on a team no matter who the coach is.

  1. "2.21) The number of interscholastic softball players from the same school on a non-interscholastic squad is limited to four on the roster of that non-interscholasticsquad. A roster is defined as all the members of the entire squad on that non-interscholastic squad. " the only time more then four can play together is from May 26 - July 31.

Indoor winter softball in Ohio is considered a different sport ... though I am pretty sure the time frame for that exception is only 11/1 - 2/1 unless that has changed in the last couple of years since I coached it.

I didn't think about that being a possibility

The coach is Chris Becraft. They played February 18th under his select team name. He is the assistant softball coach according to the athletic director and the head coach. He has been coaching the team all winter. Doesn't matter if he's paid or not. He violated the 4 person rule and he violated the indoor rule by playing after February 1st. This was posted multiple times to call attention to a problem that needs addressed.

Maybe this helps.

2.6) Participation in indoor Softball is not a violation of OHSAA non-interscholastic Sports Regulation 7.3 if played indoors from November 1, 2016 – February 1, 2017, for student-athletes.
