10 Second Rule

With one of the point of emphasis being the ten second rule once the pitcher has the ball, what are your thoughts on this. The powers that be are speeding a game up, that IMHO is fast already, generally speaking. Now we can wait even longer for the boys baseball to finish up.

I like the rule. It helps take away some of the Stalling tactics we sometimes see.

Sometimes the batters stand outside the box and take 25 cuts and look at the coach, then away, then take more cuts etc.

Also.... Some pitchers stalling will take 10 signs from the catcher, wave them off and take 5 more...LOL

The new rule will stop this from happening I hope.

Hopefully the ump will push it so the game keeps moving...... ? ;)

I've seldom seen this as an issue. An hour and 15 minute game needs to be speeded up? We still have to wait on the baseball team for another hour at least before we can catch the bus home. A wasted point of emphasis.

I don't like the 10 second rule since it is of no real value. I will not stop the stalling we see in time limited games already and who is going to operate the stopwatch. I think the girls are already getting a portion of the game taken away from them in the name of getting more games in and therefore more entry fees collected. If we are really concerned about this make the batter keep one foot in the batters box to stop the walking around between each pitch. Another way to speed the game up would be to have the umpires call the strike zone as it is defined in the rule books. We all say we love the game and can't wait for the games but lets just make sure we get them over as fast as we can.

I can't remember one high school game in the last 3 years where this was an issue, so I don't understand the point of emphasis either. Just hope the umps don't get carried away with it ...

I saw the ump warn the other team's pitcher in our scrimmage yesterday that she only had so much time (i think he warned her twice)

bad rule IMHO. Game is already fast paced and exciting, why don't they spend more time speeding up baseball?

I too think the game is fast enough already.....BUT.....A lot of batters stand outside the box taking 5 or 10 chops which does eat up a lot of time over a whole game.
Get your sign and get in the box. No need to spend 45 seconds after each pitch tapping cleats, taking chops, laying bats in front of home plate, holding your hand up to hold off the pitch while you dig in after each pitch even if it was a ball and you didn't even swing.

If each batter wastes 45 seconds after each pitch that really eats up a lot of clock.

Heck, if they just waste 25 seconds taking chops and scratching in the box that really adds up during a whole game.

All I am saying is "Get your sign, get in the box, and try to hit the ball" and do the same after each pitch.
No need to piddle around lets play ball.

It is simply not an issue in HS ball. Maybe in travel tourney with time limits but not HS. Take a stopwatch and truly time the batters. Even the slow ones don't take 45 seconds. That's a whole lot of hitchin' and swingin' and diggin'.

Speaking of dumb rules...if we are so interested in safety...and I am...why did an umpire tell my batter that she couldn't be in the on deck circle on the third base side with a righty up to the plate. He said it was too dangerous for her to cross behind the plate prior to the batter taking her place in the box. That's too dangerous but apparently its safer to stand in the place where ripped foul balls tend to fly. Hmmmmm.

We had a H.S. ump last year that would not let my dd wear her gameface to pitch.

A few years ago the powers that be, had another idea to speed up the game, eliminate the mini meetings in between the innings. Now maybe its just me, but it seems every few years they are trying to speed up a game that on average is only 1 hr to 1 20 minutes long anyway. Why? If they really want to speed the game up, teach their umpires the correct stike zone. (not all umps, ummm but most) Anyway I can't wait to be on that cold bus , waiting for the baseball game to get over.

ValleyStorm that is crazy, it makes you ask a simple question, "why?" I would think that would make for a great law suit.

what not to say, " don't ever shake off my pitch again."

another issue is hs coaches who will not let a pitcher shake off a pitch. Anyone who knows anything about pitching knows the pitcher has to feel it or it aint gonna work. I would say if a hs coach or umpire want that much control they better be ready for that much accounablility.

Rob this sounds like the same guy that called unsportsman like conduct for charging and yelling bunt on our 3rd baseman last year

I hope you keep them all in the Dayton area. I heard that one in Greenville called all the slappers out at first. His comments was he didn't like to see slapping in softball. The funny part of it was his dd became a slapper in high school. Ask Ohio Wave about that ump.
I agree I don't see it as an issue in high school, but an umpire with a fast watch could make it an issue. Sure would like to see it in travel ball. Getting tired of the many ways they find to stall.
