Games at OSU currently suspended due to rain/lightning/thunder at the playing site. Games at Pickerington are not currently affected.

I seen some great games this weekend but I also seen some of the worst umpires I have ever seen in my life. I don't know how it went with the older girls but at the 10u girls every person or coach I talked to had something to say bad about the umpires.

agreed... Had to have the head ump come over twice.. Also no fences at the 10 u fields... Just some basic calls missed.

I am not one to complain about umpires much I mean it is not the easiest job but what happened this weekend was just plain bad. The head lady was a help as she was coaching the umpires along even as the games were being played. As far as the fences I am use to not having them at the 10u level.

.

There was no doubt this was the worst umpiring at the ten u level I have seen at any tournament the last few years. Many trips from the uIC to all fields do to the weak umpires. I saw 4 games stopped for 10 minutes plus while two umpires tried to figure out the correct call. One of the games was a redo. Lol. Not kidding this was int the sundogs lasers game. Probably the biggest thing I have ever seen in fastpitch. Was a absolute joke.

I saw that call at the Laser-Sundogs game.. What a mess.. Dead ball is called because the kid was hit in the hands as she swung the bat, the ball is hit and dies in play. The umps call s dead ball, bases were loaded and she called the runner at home out as it was a force. The batter is hurt and stops between home and 1st. .. The head ump comes over and they decide to allow another batter in the place of the hurt one to continue and everyone goes back to their base... Very unusual call... Seems like the UMPs made a call that neither hurt or helped either team and let the at bat to continue. My concern is the plate ump called "dead ball" then proceeded to call outs at the bases.. Seems like a remedial error on their part.. Dead ball is dead ball.....

Wow, I agree. If the ump calls a dead ball, I can't see how runners could advance and outs could be recorded. I'm assuming if he called a dead ball it was because the batter was hit (even if it was the hands), which case he calls foul ball, or declares a hit batter and everyone advances 1 base. Not sure how an umpire could reach any other conclusion, especially when both umpires get together to discuss it.

I think I have one better than that. We had the new rule called against us called the wrap around rule, not the look back rule. We had a girl on third and the batter walked and was sent to second base and was told to stop when the pitcher lifted her arm to throw the ball to second and she even had one foot out of the circle and the ump called her out. So we get the rule book out and show him that when the pitcher makes an attempt to a base the (look back rule) is no longer in affect but he said it is not the look back rule it is called the wrap around rule and the runner is out. He talked to the uic and said he got the call wrong the next day but all I can say is wow!

The confusing part is that the batter actually put the ball in play as a result of the swing. I am not a rules expert, but they may have gotten this one right in the end. I believe that the ball is dead as soon as it hits the batter. Thus, I don't think the result of a fair or foul ball matters. Since the batter was struck while swinging, I believe the call is a dead ball, and a strike is called. The runners can not advance and no outs can be recorded (unless this happened to be strike 3, which I don't think it was). I don't remember if they called the pitch a strike or not, but they eventually put the runners back on base and the game played on.

That scenario is just a painful dead ball strike .....

The other one that had me laughing was a coach who was telling umpire a batter had to have a minimum back swing otherwise it's a bunt equivalent and should be a third strike foul out.

Minimum back swing really??? :D

I have to agree about horrible umpiring this weekend. Had an ump who replied "it didn't have much of the plate". WTH does that mean? This was the ump in the 12U championship game. He took the game out of the pitchers hands on both sides. This guy seemed to want meatballs down the middle. Come on, let these girls play the game the right way. Congrats to the Lady Lasers 02 for a great 2nd place finish. So proud of how well they did this weekend, won against some of the best and sure held their own in the ones they didn't win. Great showing for a true 11U team.

you think that was bad talk to some of the people who was at the 10u fields. Like you said Grammy just let the girls play the right way by the real rules while they are learning the game.
