I have waited to make this post so I could collect my thoughts and not sound like a sore loser so here goes....

First of all, we are primary an '06 team with three '05's and an '07. We came into this fall season knowing it would be an uphill battle because most girls were transitioning from 8u. Second of all, I am not a coach on our team, just a parent. So here's my rant.

Ok, we were playing our first game Saturday in the 10u age division against a true 12u team. My dd was on the mound doing very well when a line drive came back and got her in the shin. Let me tell you, it was a shot. Here's my complaint--- why in the world should that team be playing 10u?? Isn't that creating an unnecessary danger for the 10u players?? I realize they are already at risk, but it's even greater when the players are older and my dd is pitching from 35 ft. My dd came out for 3-4 batters and went back in and finished the game. I'm thankful she was able to go back in and finish the game. She loves pitching and so far it doesn't appear to have made her afraid while on the mound.

Thanks for for letting me vent.

That's tough, unfortunately some teams just look to go after that trophy I always like to play in the fall what I will be playing the next spring! We are also a very young first year 10u team with (6) 06' players, three 05's and one 7 yr old! Where are you guys located?

Was the tournament advertised as a combined 10U / 12U bracket? If so, as a 10U team you need to weight your options if you want to participate for the reasons you pointed out.

No, we registered for 10u. The ages were not combined.

I believe all associations around here (ASA, PGF, USSSA, USFA, NSA) now start their new years in August/September!!!! Use to be in some, that your team was registered till 12/31..............
So all teams need to register their teams in whatever Assoc. they are playing in, for the 2015/16 season........So I don't see how any team could be playing down in the fall????

It sounds like your coach is an idiot for putting his young team up against true 12u teams! I hope your dd is ok and it's a good thing that she doesn't seem gun shy about getting back in there! It seems to me that the older team should play in the fall where they will be playing in the spring but some people will do ANYTHING for a chance at a little hardware....

We didn't know until after the game. The tourney should not allow it if they want to keep credibility, but I guess when you are running the tourney you can do what you want. At the very least, they should've let the other teams know in advance.

I believe that tournament was an ENQ qualifier and if so, they should not have been eligible to play.

True if ENQ. ASA restricts players in qualifiers to those that will be age-eligible for the championship event (see ASA Code 308.A.03).

Otherwise, ASA still operates on a calendar year even though they allow registrations to run a year from Aug/Sept.

But even worse is that she said it was a "true 12U team," meaning it was an '03 team. If it weren't an ENQ, I could maybe understand an '04 all-star rec team finishing out its summer by playing in such a tournament at 10u still, but under no circumstances could I fathom an 03 team playing 10u. I don't get it all. Strange?

What team was it? Was it a true travel team, or was it an all-star team? Or something else altogether?

I agree with the other posts, play with the age group you will be playing in next summer.

As a different thought, from someone who has several family members who are pitchers, invest in a good pair of under uniform, shin guards and a heart guard. These have saved the girls several times from injuries. I have seen them take the shot to the shin, several times in just the last two seasons. As an addition I have seen the shin guards prevent injury when the pitcher goes to cover home and the runner slides into their legs. A worthwhile investment in their safety.

Sorry, I may have misspoke about true 12u. I don't know all birth ages. It's a team listed as 12u on the Heart of Ohio website. I thought they were 10u bc they weren't with the org last year.

I have 3 daughters that pitch as well. We have used the heart guard at the younger ages, but never thought about shin guards. Do you use standard "soccer" ones or is there something else made more specific for softball?

Being from area I know the coaches kid is a 05 but was told the team is mix of 04 and 05. I can't speak to the exact mix. Just makes me question a organization that use to be a solid group but has fallen some. I have no dog(my team is 14u) in fight but was told they were going to play 10u in fall to get ready for 12u in the spring. If they do have 04 or 03 girls they should have played 12u. They were with org last year and coach coaches both this team and older heart team at 18u I believe. So should know rules and know better if he has 04 girls on team.
