TD not very consistent with this tournament! Had a team pick up a player from another team that was already on a roster of another team in the same age bracket b/c of being short players...comes down to the final game of the age group and then tells the one team (which played with 8 players b/c they were short too) that the team with the "illegal" player would be disqualified and their games wouldn't count.....but when the team from his organization gets beat in the final game, suddenly the team isn't disqualified! Funny that it worked out that way when his team/organization might have to pay out $$ to another team for uniforms! Don't tell the girls one thing and then change it! They worked hard to only be misled. Not sure if the coaches from his team were aware of what was going on, didn't talk to them but we were totally misled & won't be looking at playing in any Urbana tournaments again! Might want to think about what image you create for your organization! (...and yes well aware Urbana didn't win other age brackets)

I'll take some credit for this one. My 14u team did not have enough players to start on saturday and I picked up a player that played for urbana in the first game but is not a normal lunachix player. We played HoO Bombers who only had 8 players so we should have done the same looking back, but here it is oct 3rd and 4th and if a team is looking for a win on an illegal player issue they should have protested during the game. Waiting until the next day to say something makes it hard for a td to please everyone. All they had to do was say something and we would have removed the player. Not sure if thats the correct way to handle it or not. I just sorry that In Oct it becomes an issue when teams are just trying to get some games in to see where they are with next years team!
So I think Jon did a fine job with this tournament with being told on Friday he could not have the park in Urbana and having to scramble to move it to a new park.
Win or lose were are there for the girls so I still think people will draw their own image of what each organization is. To have parents complain about a tournament makes it harder for tds to let those teams back in their tournaments that they hold.

I had talked to the team coach (team C) about 15 minutes before the final game was played and at that time he did not want to protest anything. About 2 minutes before the game started he decided to go ahead and protest the team with the illegal player.

Of coarse I want to make the right decision on this protest. So I called the Head person In charge o IFA.

I explained to Tommy Voss that team A played the first game of the tournament. Team Be was playing in the second game. Team B picked up a player off of team A to have 9 players. I was informed by team B of this about 1/2 hour after the game was completed.

Now it was the next day and I was approached about a possible protest about what happened the previous day with what team B did.

His answer was this.

If the protest was not made at the time of the infraction then nothing can be done to change what happened. You cannot go back and change history. If the protest was made at the time of the infraction, then you correct the infraction and remove the illegal player and proceed with the game.

I relayed that to Team C. At that point he was unhappy with my decision.

Now where I went wrong with all of this was in the first conversation with the coach of Team C. I had told him that if he wanted to protest this illegal player then Team B would have to forfeit the game played with the illegal player. He decided at that time he did not want to protest.

So when he did protest I decided to call the Head guy. I wanted to make the right call on the whole problem.

I myself take allot of pride in the tournaments I run. So I needed to make sure the right call was made. And worse of all, team A is my team. And that is why I had to call Tommy to get that correct call.

I did have a discussion with the coach of Team B after all of this happened, and he told me that his intention was only to have 9 players on the field. He was not trying to cheat anyone. And that when the coach of Team C told him that he only had 8 players, Team B did not have to take an out for fielding only 8 players.

Team B was not a factor in the tie breakers that decided the tournament. It was decided by runs allowed. My team gave 9 runs in 3 games and team C gave up 10.

I hope this explains everything that happened.

How would a team know that there was an illegal player if they hadn't played the team with the player on the original roster until the next day? Regardless, the team got into the tournament to try to win uniforms to help with their expenses for the next season.

Until we held the 1st Ohio Fastpitch Jamboree over 11 years ago just to prove that you could hold tournament in August, No one played Softball after August. Unless you played indoor ball.

Just the fact that anyone is even holding tournament this late in the year is a great thing for Ohio and the Girls.

One of the reason we could never get Tournaments outdoor after august was no one could field a Team.

And I'm sure that still a problem, seems like to me Jon did a good job at explaining to the Coaches what was going on.

I'm sure there allot of this that goes on that most the time no one even aware of it. But Jon didn't hide anything from anyone.

If were going to advance the Game we need to be playing years around, out door and indoor.

And the short side of that will be, at time it will be hard to field a Team with your Roster.

Looking at the Big Picture or Looking after your own concerns. Just a matter of what you think is best for the game or the best for YOU.

Time to grow up and Start Looking at the BIG PICTURE. Advance the Game in Ohio! Some Girls are playing in the 250 Games Range a year. But you won't find that any of them girls live in Ohio. But in order to grow that what it take.

Do you think being concern about someone having to use a pick up player inside the same tournament is a big problem.
Go out west they do what every it take to get the girls Games... They being doing it since 1975 and now in 2009 in Ohio were still crying about it.. We should be happy that we have any chance to even play Ball after August since it took us so long to even get past playing after August.

Well said Ricky. Knowing Jon, I doubt he had any ill intentions to try to shaft somebody or another team. I would bet if the HoO had asked for a pickup player, Jon would have allowed it also. It all comes down to money. We had a big discussion thread last year about QF's $1000 to the winner tournaments. That fact that the winner of this tournament gained a substantial monetary prize changed the rules per se. The HoO entered this tournament with the prize money in mind to help offset team costs and wanted a fair shot at it per the rules of IFA, etc. I see both sides here. I applaud what Jon is trying to do in Urbana and with softball in general and I'm sure his intentions are in the right place. However, like I said before, when money gets involved, the expectations change for better or worse.

We had a good time playing in Urbanna last year with the MOB, and John runs a stand up program out there. And once again we need to get the money out of the game. Give them a sweatshirt and another tournament mabey. Or remember it is about the kids and like I heard someone suggest before some giftcards at a wing place or something 5-7 bucks a kid.

Yea and what is up with the Map?????:confused::confused:

Can't give out money based on team Placement. I know it is a gift card, or even a berth to another event.... but it can't be done according to OHSAA. The simple act of giving out gift cards to the winners can get the girls ineligible for HS sports. Same wiyth paid berths. It's a monetary prize based on the placement of the team in the tournament. Not allowed.

Now, out west.. there are many money events that are played for trip to Nationals, etc... Usually 1500 for first and 1000 for second place. That way the finals don't get so intense if only the $1500 is given as a prize and some other thing like hoodies given for second.
