Buckeye Heat 95 was at the Region 9 Closed USA/ASA Qualifier in Toledo, going 3-3. Pool win over Wizards - Bastida (12-7). Pool loss to Champion Fastpitch (5-4). First round of bracket play, we lost to Buckeye Heat 94 Clark (6-5). Second round (first round of loser's bracket) we beat Buckeye Heat - McGhee in a run rule (I need to pull the book to see the precise score). Third round we beat Wizard - Eisenbrandt 7-5 and fourth round we lost again to Buckeye Heat 94 Clark, this time in a 9-1 run rule.
Buckeye Heat 95 will not be on my ballot for a top ten position this week. But if we can start scoring more of the runners that we have been able to get on base, we should be in fine shape for the rest of the season. When I do pull the book, I'll come back here to update on the runners left on base. I know that we left 9 on base in the Champion Fastpitch game and with the exception of our second game with Buckeye Heat 94 Clark we hit very well. (Update: left on base v. Wizards Bastidas, 6; v. Champion Fastpitch, 9; v. Buckeye Heat 94 Clark, first game, 7; v. Wizards Eisenbrandt, 5; vs. Buckeye Heat 94 Clark, second game, 2). Six home runs for the weekend and lots of nice line drive singles and doubles.
Defensively, we did not play badly but in our losses our opponents made good use of the openings that our mistakes created as well as good use of some excellent hitting and other productive at-bats.
I'm also thinking the head coach should bench me as first base coach. In our second loss to Buckeye Heat 94 Clark I made a very ill-advised decision to send a runner when the throw in after her single got past second base. At that time, we needed that run to avoid the run-rule and I had no business taking a chance with that runner. So I violated what we preach to the players, namely to be aware of the game situation at all times.
As for other teams, I think HoO Explosion has now established by its consistently high quality of play at the Dayton Metro, Shreve, and Toledo qualifiers (winning a USA/ASA national berth at Toledo) that it belongs in the upper half of the top 10. Buckeye Heat 94 and Champion Fastpitch should also garner votes in the upcoming poll.
I haven't been able to process all the results that were posted for Laser Nation (I'd love to see the brackets for the tournament with scores if someone has those), but it sounds like Sapphires had a great tournament as did EMR 94 (editing update: EMR 94 won the tournament, with Sapphires placing 2nd). Lasers Scarlett had great results (editing update: they won it) playing up at 18u and Cincy Doom 95 represented Ohio very very well at the Chattanooga tournament. Classics Black winning Compuware has to put that team back in the top ten. Also remember seeing that Lasers Silver had some good wins. And frankly remember seeing something about Tidal Waves 94 and Ohio Ice Black results, but can't recall any specifics. (This is the third time that I have edited this post to add teams, and I'm sure that I've missed somebody obvious; if so, I apologize to that team or teams).
So, lots of teams to consider. If you've got the time, submit a short update on your team and where you think it fits in.
Get your ballots in by 9:00 pm on Tuesday. If the number of ballots doesn't pick up this and next week, I'll just discontinue the poll part and post a "Developments" thread each week.
Thanks.
