Depends on how strong you game is and the team you play on. If you are a strong player who has played varsity in the spring on a good team you have probably seen the same pitchers you will see at 18u. If you are primarily a jv player you would be better suited for 16u.

If you play in showcases and want to play college ball, then I suggest staying at 16U based on feedback from college coaches as to who they are watching the most.

My DD had the same option as your daughter this past year.. after talking to bunch of people we decided to have her play 18U... because her team played in college showcase (compuware, stingray,Nashville,Best of the Best and Orland Sparks) she had a chance to play in front of numerous coaches. As long as you contact the colleges I believe coaches will come and see your daughter play. JMHO

In order to answer this you must also know where she is in school.

This may be her last real opportunity to play summer ball in front of college coaches. She will have had to make her applications in the fall of her senior year and the schools will issue their acceptances in the spring of her senior year. Her senior summer is getting ready for college ball.

Under most conditions a girl that is going into her junior year should play 18U regardless of her age.

Move up, if the colleges are interested they WILL find her.
And you have to do your marketing to the colleges also.
The one Columbus tournament had 5 different colleges in to see dd play, that we confirmed in advance.

Well I'm going to be a sophomore this year (gotta love the december birthdays!) and my HS team was really poltical and my parents don't play the whole "kiss up to the coach" game so I got stuck on JV (miserable time between the coaching and intensity level :( ). The 18u team will be in all the big tournaments but at the same time most of the 16u team I'm trying out for are going to be in showcases as well. I'm just confused about which one would be the better choice

What are your hopes for playing in college? Do you see yourself playing DI, DII, DIII or NAIA? Be honest about the last question, do you really have the dedication and skill set to play DI or DII. If you answer yes, play 16u and write every coach of a school you want to play for.

If you are a DIII or NAIA player (not necessarily because of skill, but because you're going to college for an education and not to play ball) than I would look seriously at 18u.

Well I'm 99% sure that my grades will take me farther then softball will (I met the qualifications for college honors programs as a freshman :)) but judging that I'll most likely be taking AP classes for college credit, I think I'm looking to attend a DI school where they accept those credits. If I get accepted for softball that'd be great, but I know that when I'm at college it'd be about focusing on getting my degree and my future career and all that

A few other things to consider:

Assuming you played 16u this summer, how did you do (be objective)? If you were a strong hitter are ready for the move up. If your hitting was so-so another year at 16u may be better. Also, what are you friends and teammates doing? You want to have an enjoyable summer no matter what
