Speaking of all this, and being aware of the controversy regarding the MV Express and regional qualification last year (I think it was in the Gold division), I've got questions that I haven't been able to answer through the ASA/USA web site:

1. Does winning the 18U state tournament qualify the team for ASA 18U nationals? (I'm guessing no, but I wouldn't put in money down on it, since the information is so hard to come by)

2. How are the "regional" berths to the 18U nationals earned? Or is there no such thing as a "regional" berth to the 18U nationals, but rather only a regional berth to the Regional Word Series?

I'm really not a stupid person, but trying to figure this out hurts my head. Why is this information so hard to glean?

I know for sure (at least 3-4 years ago) We won the 18u ASA state championship at Ashland and we were awarded a trip to the ASA National Tournament (wherever it was held that year). If you play in a Regional qualifier and don't win or come in 2nd you lose your State Bid. not sure if that was what you were after???

try to answer some for you.... typically in the State there will be 2-3 berths given to the Nationals. The National Qualifiers is only one berth for the winning team. Now saying that the East National the winning team recieves a berth for the following year. one thing to remember they are States and Metro's and each one is treated equally. One Last thing if you have a Berth to the ASA Nationals you can not play in another tournament that has berths awarded or you forfeit your current berth. Example.... you win a 18U berth from the National Qualifier in Fairborn in June, you can not play in the State Championship in July.

Ron, quit calling it the State Tournament. It is the ASA Region 9 Championships. Region 9 encompasses Ohio and WV. Just because many of the WV teams don't show up and it looks like only Ohio teams are playing doesn't change the ASA given name for the tournament. Your an ASA official you should know better.

CGS there is no state tournament for fastpitch in Ohio. There could be if Howard Honiker, the Region 9 Commissioner wanted there to be but he doesn't. Based upon attendence at these tournaments I can understand why he doesn't.

ASA awards each Region with 2 berths to the ASA Nationals. It also awards 1 berth per Region that is an open qualifer to any team in the US who hasn't already qualified. It is commonly referred to as an ASA NIT Berth. Metro's like Cleveland, Dayton, Cincinnati may also garner additional berths based upon fast pitch teams registered. Metro Commissioners can award those berths as they see fit. If they don't award the berth they can turn the berth into the Regional Commissioner who can then award them as he sees fit. Mr. Honiker and his local commissioners have tournaments set up around the state to award these berths. Local commissioners and or associations can bid on hosting these tournaments, just like they do on a national level. Many, as you can tell by this thread, are confused as to who are eligible to play in these tournaments. The reality is you should check the ASA website under tournaments to see how to qualify.

The reality is that there is not enough interest in playing in these qualifiers to hold several tournaments to award the berths, so they hold 1 tournament in each age group and generally add in any Metro berths to award anywhere from 2 -5 berths, depending on age group. On occassion you may have a change based upon accommidating public demand, but those are exceptions not the rule.

So, Daryl,

If I go to the ASA site (as I have several times) and go to 18U tournaments and then click on "Qualifiers", those would be all of the qualifying tournaments? Because there sure aren't very many of them.

And do I also understand your post to say that there are some berths than can be awarded by the ASA without respect to performance in a qualifying tournament?

Thanks.

Ron, I'm only right when it comes to fastpitch tournaments. As you well know, in slowpitch there are often Metro tournaments that lead to State Tournaments; that lead to Regional Tournaments when it comes to ASA slowpitch.

CGS. ASA Commissioners have until March to declare where their Regionals will be held. They then tell the home office who then posts them on the ASA Website along with the NIT dates and locations. Even then the people who update the website are sometimes late. You can however call the ASA HQ in OK City to get the final information.

ASA Regional Commissioners can decide on how they want to delegate berths. Mr. Honiker a couple of years ago decided to have 5 berths at the 18U Regionals and gave one berth to the winner of a fastpitch league in Toledo (SGS) that had over 200 10U-18U teams in it. The winners in each age group turned down the berths and no one used them. He was trying to use the berths to convert them from a USSSA league to an ASA league. Needless to say he didn't make the offer the next year as I have heard. In every year that I have been involved with this sport at least 1/3rd of the berths go unused.

For those that are confused by this thread, just read the ASA Code in the back of your current rule book and it describes how berths are determined and how they are awarded.

I know if I didn't know already what this procedure was I'd be confused, so just take a look at the code and it will satisfy your curiosity.

quick question...not to sure on how this is working. ???
my team qualified for ASA nationals last yr. but suppossedly if you have so many returning for the that same team next yr. (this yr.'s team) you can use the berth for the following yr. is this true?

so since we've already qualified for ASA we can't go to any ASA tourny's (this yr.) that are awarding berths..correct?

any help would be much appreciated!!
