I know that all HS is 43 feet next year.

What about Jr High?

Also - is it everyone at 14U and above in ASA and U-trip at 43feet?

Thanks - trying to verify my pitching distances for a Fall league.

ASA hasn't made it official yet.. but sure they are going that way since all HS will be that way in 2011 at 43' ft.

I am sure that is making some Fall qualifiers for 14u wondering what to do. But, if you have a Fall qualifier at 14u.. you have to go by the rules and the rules state 40 ft. As a TD, you have NO right to change the rule.. until the association itself does. And so far, it's not "official".

Now, JH ball... I'd say 40ft still... since most are 13u.

My 14U fall league is not sanctioned so I am just looking to do what is best for the kids at 14U - it sounds to me like 43 feet is my answer.

My dd's pitching coach has started working her at 43. She will be 14 for 2011 and will pitch in jr. high ball next spring too.

The OHSAA website includes this cryptic note in the 2010-2011 Softball Regulations manual:

"For the 2011 season and subsequent seasons, the high school pitching distance shall be 43 feet. For middle school, the recommended distance is 40 feet."

Recommended? Does that mean it's mandatory or optional? If it's optional, who gets to decide? The coaches? What if one wants it and the other doesn't?

As confusing as that statement might be, personally I don't have to worry about it for at least six more months. By that time, I will have attended the mandatory state rules interpretation meeting and a half dozen umpire association meetings- plenty of opportunity to get this better defined and figure out exactly how this rule should be administered before stepping foot on a field next season.

In the meantime, such a vague directive is sure to leave some people scratching their heads.

The jr high distance will most likely be set by individual leagues/conferences. Our league has no ohsaa sanctioned teams so we can do what we want.

Last week at our Central District softball meeting they announced that Junior High will still be at 40ft.. That's the news we got on it.

Unless your USSSA as they are optional for 2010 which means you could have a fall 2010 qualifier at 43' if ya wanted to......

ASA would have to be 40' since they dont give you the option.

I think if ASA goes to 43' for 14u then jr high should also....

Wizards - I'm with you on that point. It would make little sense for pitchers to go from 40 to 43 feet. Especiallky if they're working out with their travel team in the winter, drop down to 40 for school team, then back to 43 for travel ball.
