I know it is way early but I have the official dates already for the 2011 W.S. down in Pigeon Forge Tennessee.
Talked with Freddie Mullins this morning to see how things are going and to see if any dates were set yet.

July 19th thru the 24th.

Opening ceremonies will be on the 19th, with pool play starting on the 20th. Will be using the Pigeon Forge and Sevierville complexes once again.

Wasnt there this year but have been there other times. I would not rank it up there with ASA when it comes to competition, but I would say it would be close to NSA Nationals. Some years are stronger than others, but they do get a good draw from all around. Believe me there are some outstanding teams there in each age group.
Looking at their site where teams were from, you would see Georgia,Florida,Texas, Wisconsin, the Carolina`s, Michigan, Arkansas,Alabama, ect.......

This past summer the Stingrays 12u and Lake Erie Waves 14u were there. Both of them had nothing but great things to say.
Also I believe Heart of Ohio 12u was down there also. I know there as a couple more Ohio teams like the Miami Valley Xpress and such, but can not remember whom all.

Tournament itself is well ran by Jim and Freddie Mullins. There are 5 fields there in Pigeon Forge and 4 in Sevierville, which is only 2 miles down the parkway. Fields are well groomed and the infields are a soft red clay.

The format itself is 2 games in pool action, then it goes to double elimination. Teams will play one game a day during pool play. Games go from early morning (8am) to late at night under the lights.

I personally would highly recommend playing there. The tournament atmosphere is awesome and of course being down there in the Smoky Mountain area is a neat expierence for the families.

As my team already knows, we are already planning our trip down there next July for our Nationals/World Series.

how is the SEAA World Series format, competition, etc...?? We are trying to put our 2011 schedule together and if ASA A nationals is in California, we may need to consider more economical options. For those that know, please chime in.

Les - Our 11U team went this past year - Here is my cliff notes version of my observations.

1 - Opening ceremonies were bad - My daughter went to ASA-A's the year before so maybe my sample was not the best - All I know is ASA's were very organized and a lot of fun - Our entire team left before we walked the stage in Pigeon Forge.....

*****That is the last bad thing I have to say about SEAA******

2 - The competition was great at the 12U level - We did play 2 teams that would not make it past pool play in Ohio, but other than that, every other game was top notch...

3 - The facilities were great - The fields were in great shape and the volunteers took great care of everyone there..... short story - My wife and I brought our 5 month old....115 degrees with the heat index.....Someone from the staff noticed my wife and my baby girl in the heat...they brought them into the concession/umpires area in the A/C to keep them safe - Can't say enough about how gratefull I am for that!!!!!

4 - The area is FULL of things to do from a team perspective - Anyone interested in going shoot me a pm and I will fill you in on what we did and what we recommend.

5 - There are a lot of places to stay, but we hit the mother-load with the help of one of our parents - Anyone THINKING about going let me know and I will give you the info - Limited space, but the price is great and it is within an 8 iron of the main facility. (my 8 iron....if you aim right and play it back in your stance!)

Overalll, we (11U Rays) had a great time in Pigeon Forge - The Opening Ceremonies were a little crazy, but the ball and the facilities were great - I would recommend it to anyone looking for a "cost effective" alternative to ASA/NSA/USSSA nationals - We thought about going back, but we may be heading to Myrtle Beach for some "sand fun" this coming summer!!!!!!

Les, It goes without saying that we have to remember the age of our girls....We would all like to test our skill against the best, which is no doubt ASA Nationals, but at some point we need to remind ourselves they are kids...I truly believe that we face quality competion here in Ohio and do not need to prove ourselves anymore - If we can play ball somewhere fun and give the parents a "mini vacation" in the process.......we did our job as coaches.

Was sent a email the other day that has the link to the photographer`s site that took a ton of pictures of all the games. Amazing how many pics are on there from both sites, Pigeon Forge and Sevierville in all age groups. Still going thru them.
Very well done!

I would recommend this tourney. The opening ceremony was hectic and crowded so we did not stay more than 10/15 min. Other than that we had a great time down there this year. The 16U competition was good that we faced and it was well run with consistent umpiring.

My daughter attended a couple of years ago as a 16 and loved it...we all did. Some strong teams, some not so strong but great ball and vacation package. Here is what our team did for lodging: we rented two massive cabins that held 20-30 people each (many separate rooms, pool tables, game area, kitchens, etc) and put the families and players in them for the week. It worked great and ended up being much cheaper and infinately better than renting hotel rooms. Drawback is that if you dont reserve one soon you wont be able to get them for next year.

We are staying at the Best Western Plaza Inn Sunday thru Wednesday nights in Pigeon Forge. Then we are staying at the Brookside Resort in Gatlinburg Thursday thru Saturday nights.
Any other Ohio teams that are going down also feel free to let us know and stop by and say hey!

We were there two years in a row, and they run a great tourney, although we were there as a slow pitch team a few years ago.
We have some great memories of the area.

First of all, you have to go eat at the Old Mill restaraunt in Pigeon Forge. Absolutely the best place to eat in the area. Go hungry because you will not be able to finish all they bring you.

Second, when you have time, go for a drive up into the mountains towards Clingman's dome. You will go past an area to pull over for a scenic view on the left after a few miles. Stop, look and take some pictures, then go on and drive around the really sharp turns where you can look back and see where you were and go to the next area to pull over on the right side of the road. Pull over there and go down the path and swim in the creek at the bottom of the path. It is a climb, but one of the coolest things we have done as a team, and family, in our years together. It is also one of our favorite memories as a team. Seriously, pack a lunch, take your swim suits, and go have fun while you are there playing ball. The water is chilling, but is so crystal clear and an absolutely beautiful place to take a dip.

Those are two things I would recommend that are cheap (the mountains are free) and fun to do. I tried not to get all caught up in the attractions and trinkets in Gatlenburg and Pigeon Forge.

Last, if you want to go to a nice Dinner Theatre, go to the Dixie Stampede. It is also a great time, great food, and they are pretty good at getting large groups involved in some audience participation stuff.

Hope that helps.

We took all of our girls to the Stampede last year...Had a blast - Another place to go to hungry..man do they feed you there.

Nice to hear they moved the opening ceremonies - Obviously Freddy and the crew listen to the teams and are trying to make this a "must attend" tournament. Good luck to everyone that makes the trip - I'm sure you will have a blast.
