Such a cool thing to see for these kids. I wish they had programs like this in Columbus area.

I know, I was talking with my youngest daughter (she is 28 now) and we both would have jumped at the opportunities these young boys and girls have today.

A lot of people complain about the REDS organization in regards to Ws and Ls at the major league level but most have no idea what they do for the kids in SW Ohio, SE Indiana and NKY from instructional level, to HS ball and high level tournament play.

Back in 2011 my daughter and I got to meet Jenny at a Mizuno event. She is the real deal very passionate to pass on opportunities for the girls.

The ladies that come out to instruct at the academy have the same desire and drive to give back to the game. The only draw back is like you said, the players have to come to the nearest RBI facility in your case Cleveland, Cincinnati or Pittsburgh since MLB has no plans to set up satellite teams or locations at this time.
But...one could apply to sponsor teams through boys and girls club of America to work into events like the one with the MLB All star game.
That is what Finch did with her Aces team that will be playing in the Los Angeles event that is based out of the New Jersey area. (Its loaded in talent)... There are a couple others as well.

I really started paying more attention to the program over the last 2yrs. If they keep going I think eventually they could build some powerhouse teams.

seems some of the kids in the Org come from inner city less fortunate homes. Unless I have misunderstood what I see and read. There’s a lot of great athletes from that lower income spectrum that you don’t get to see on the fields but they are very blessed athletes. You just never know until you see them play the game. Once they fall in love with it the sky is the limit.
Really Good stuff for the Reds RBI program. I’m gonna try to stop and check it out when I come down to Cincy soon.

The REDS have several YOUTH programs.
One is leagues and fundamental training for inner city youth boys and girls 8U to 18U. Some of these athletes make it to the REDS travel teams from their local recreational team.

You are right, many people do not understand that many of the kids from urban and even suburban areas around Cincinnati the family has to use the city bus for transportation. So, If you drive around Cincinnati you will find about 35 fields the REDS have fixed up for local play so the kids do not have to travel to the REDS Academy on a regular basis or they use local HS fields.

Another huge benefit for Cincinnati area ladies is the High School fall league.
This league is coached by local High school coaches and generally gets just over 100 high school players participate in the fall leagues and workouts.
The ladies come from schools in the CMAC, SWOC, GMC, CHL and ECC and are put on one of 6 teams.

The other area is travel ball for 12U and up.
Most teams are B/C level and compete in events like fastpitch showdowns, smaller local tournaments with the exception of the Finch Classic where the 16U Black team is competing in and regional RBI/MLB play.
The travel teams draw mostly from the 275 loop but also get players about a one and a half hour radius of the academy. Lower Dayton OH, Batesville IND, Maysville Ky. etc.

The teams that compete at junior divisions and senior divisions at MLB regionals / world series are more of an A level travel and are a combination of players from the other teams 12/14ujunior and 14/16/18u senior.

The REDS also offer low cost or FREE clinics for all coaches recreational, travel, high school, and their players that range from softball school, to technical fielding, pitching, catching and and hitting skills. Naturally any training with MLB or Team USA / is reserved for academy players and coaches but they do have special guest come in occasionally for the general clinics.

One cool area available to academy athletes is the ACT test prep help as well as college recruiting networking for athletes and families that is also offered at the academy.
Athletes and families can explore the many scholarships available outside of athletic to help offset the cost of collage.

I don't see the academy ever pulling together a "top level A program" like Finch Lady Aces because that is not the goal of the program and honestly, many families on higher level travel teams are looking to enter events the REDS have no desire to attend. Keep an eye on the REDS RBI facebook page or the website for events that is coming up. If you decide to come down let me know and I will meet you. https://www.facebook.com/RedsCommunityFund

Sounds like they don’t build teams based on talent level. They just place players on rosters and go.

Kind of...The purpose and direction of RBI is much different than the average travel organization. There is a strong focus on player participation and development at the entry or recreational level as well as providing opportunities for players to see the benefits and experience with travel tournament play.

RBI League teams (non tournament) are formed from the pool of players available at each age level/group. (The same with the fall HS leagues). Players work out get ranked and are then placed with a HS or RBI coach. This is also to avoid potential OHSAA issues with the HS coaches and HS players from their programs playing in the HS leagues. This is not part of the upcoming tryouts and additional dates will be posted for these activities.

With the RBI travel teams, The ladies go through a rigorous tryout over the next couple weeks and are scored with a performance rubric. The REDS have a nice tryout form and structure that many other organizations have adopted.
Top scoring athletes have the opportunity to play on the teams that are playing the stronger travel schedule if there are openings. Now, a coach can pass on a player or, the player may chose to play on another team due to schedule, family etc. Open positions and spots are decided by the coach of the team.
The 16u team playing in CA is made up of ladies that did not get offers from the other two 16U teams. With that said they have played pretty good ball at 16U finishing second in a TNT event in Mentor Ohio last weekend and some good games in the fastpitch showdown events.
The ladies got to meet the great one today as well
as some lifetime memories with many of softballs household names.

Ain’t this really what girls softball is all about? I miss them days of Coaches young lady’s that couldn’t hit a ball or catch a fly ball or even field one in rec-league. Unfortunately them days are fading away for girls in the future. It’s Sad to think about it. I’m glad to see a organization like this doing what they do..

The academy gets ladies in the instructional leagues that do not even own a glove or cleats.
One would be surprised on how many at the HS level in most cities/areas get their first glove used at play it again sports at the HS level in many urban and some suburban programs.

The team that flew out to CA for the Jennie Finch All Star game tournament was a true B level team that competes at events like the fastpitch showdowns. A lot of the programs that were flown out were very strong B or even A teams but they competed well.

Many don't understand the quality of play on the "junior and senior teams" that compete for a WS title. Here is just one example of the quality of competition and level of play at the RBI World series https://www.mlb.com/video/rbi-softball-world-series

Its neat to read about each teams path to the RBI WS.

Its tough when you have to compete vs. Houston or teams that may not quite embrace the spirit of RBI.

Nothing against them, you play the best to be the best. Opportunities for all RBI ladies though match the efforts of the teams and coaches. I will say very few teams provide the opportunities and memories that the REDS RBI does.
