Pitching and Pitchers Discussion 40 ft vs 43 ft.?

ifubuildit, I guess my only reply to that idea would be about the additional reaction time for the hitter, too. Wouldn't that negate the calculation you found?

Horse,

Based on the calculation and I am not a math whiz here my take on it was as follows:

All the parameters being the same. Swing speed at contact. Reaction of the bat to the ball. (Bat Reflex of the ball off the barrel) Speed of the ball at contact and distance from the circle to the plate on release. (Would not be 40 ft but more like 34 - 35 due to leap)

The end result between the distance of 40 and 43 feet was 4/10ths of a second. I will see if I can find the article again but it may not be easy.

The distance change will definitely give the pitcher a couple extra tenths of a second reaction time. However, the distance will give the hitter a little more reaction time therefore causing the number of pitches hit back up the middle to increase.

So, the pitcher gets more time to react, but will have to react to more balls being hit at her.

Just this past year, Florida teams that were 16U and above went to 43 feet...that includes travel ball and high school. ?It seems that the girls who throw more breaking pitches benefit more from the increased distance than those who just throw for speed. ?It is my hope that they bring 43 feet to Ohio ASAP, as that is where our girls will be throwing from in college.

The "let's go to 43' because the colleges do" ?is totally bogus. ? College pitchers have managed to make it after having pitched at 40' in high school to this day. ? I doubt that Cat Osterman suffered for long in making the adjustment. ? Moving the pitcher to 43' feet will simply make harder to play for the average pitcher. ? It won't affect the 6' 2" stud pitcher who will be just fine either way. ? IMHO if we really want to get more offense then lets put a tee out at home plate and wow we can see some real offense. ? The limited offense in fastpitch makes each hit and each defensive play more valuable. ? Many people cannot see the beauty in a hard fought 1 -0 game. ? ?Many sports are going the way of the NBA where it is no longer a sport but a show, ?everything is either a dunk our three pointer and that get boring to me. ? I like the game I like to watch fastpich and I enjoy see the teams scratch and claw for a run because it means the game.
