Aliso Niguel High softball coach Alan Caouette, who has built one of Orange County’s most successful programs, said he was fired Monday, June 21 after an 11-year tenure that included playoff appearances each season, four league titles and a coaching award.
“It’s heart-breaking,” said Caouette, a walk-on coach whose daughter Alex was a standout sophomore pitcher on the team this past spring season.
Caouette said new principal Michael Hatcher said there were rumblings from parents about his coaching style and that the school was going in a “different direction.”
Hatcher, who had served as interim principal the past year at Aliso Niguel, didn’t return an e-mail Tuesday seeking comment.
Capistrano Unified School District chief communications officer Ryan Burris said Wednesday the situation was a “personnel matter” and “we cannot provide any details.”
Caouette’s wife, Adrianne, sent an e-mail to Hatcher on Tuesday stating their family has been “inundated with calls from parents past and present, as well as players, who were unbelievably shocked and surprised as well as sad and disappointed that their beloved coach will no longer be (at the school).”
Hatcher replied: “The information you shared has already been taken into consideration with this decision. I know you disagree with this decision, and you have every right to feel that way. ANHS will continue to move forward in this new direction.”
Aliso Niguel finished 17-11 this past spring season, losing in the first round of the CIF Division 1 playoffs to top-seeded Norco. The Wolverines tied with Dana Hill for second in the South Coast League.
Caouette compiled a 211-85 record at Aliso Niguel and was honored as a CIF Southern Section “Champion for Character” coach in 2017-18. He said he also took pride in his team’s community service, the improvements made to the Wolverines’ softball facility and the players who went on to play in college.
Caouette also coaches the Cal Cruisers, one of the top travel teams in Orange County. He said he remains interested in coaching high school softball and will continue his role on the CIF-SS coaches advisory board.
Prior to Aliso Niguel, Caouette led Estancia to a pair of league titles. His career record stands at 247-116.
