Great question Crushgirl!
The 70's were a magical time for me as far as sports teams were concerned, being 10 years old at the start of a new decade and living in NE Ohio we didn't have a lot going on with our Cleveland teams but when I saw the Big Red Machine play for the first time I was hooked, Rose, Perez, Gullet, Morgan and my favorvite Johnny Bench, who I pretended I was everytime I got behind the plate on my little league team.
In Basketball its the Lakers, West, Wilt, Goodrich, Harriston, Baylor and co.
But my all time favorites has to be the Cowboys, hey they were labeled America's team right! how could you go wrong here.
Starting with stone faced headcoach Tom Landry, he led the Cowboys to five Super Bowls in the seventies wininng two of them,
The Doomsday defense with names like Howley,Waters, Harris, Too Tall and one of my favorites LeeRoy Jordan a undersize middlelinebacker that wasn't afraid to put a whoppin on guys a lot bigger then himself.
I would set garbage cans in the back yard and try to hit them with a football from various distances while pretending to be Staubach, if you would have been there you might have heard my best Pat Summeral voice saying
"Staubach on the play Action to Garrison drops back to throw has time, throws , hits DREW PEARSON AT THE THIRDY THE TWENTY ONE MAN TO BEAT HE'S AT THE TEN, FIVE, TOUCHDOWN!"
Once Staubach threw a bomb that hit the top of the can shot out about 25 feet to the left, right though the neigbors garage window, that interception really hurt because my dad busted my tail good!
I thought about saying I didn't throw it Roger did,but he was pretty upset with me and I felt that might just make things worse.
At that time those guys were larger then life, as you get older things change your outlook on life and its piorities is different, I follow the Indians and Browns but the passion and excitment is not the same.
Thanks Crushgirl for allowing me to take a walk down memory lane.
