What is everyone hearing about composite bats for 2011? I hear they are going to add many more to the banned list. Is anyone else hearing this?

Go to the ASA web site and it has a lot of information...

Q. "I've heard that ASA is going to Ban all composite bats. Is that true?"

A. "The ASA rules and regulations regarding bats are based on the performance level of the bat, not what it is made of. ASA currently has no intent to ban all bats made of a particular material. Instead, the intent is that if changes are to be made, ASA will most likely make adjustments to the ASA bat performance standard and continue to regulate bats based on their performance characteristics."

This is what I found and had to type it out as it will not allow you to copy and paste. :D

Thanks Howard! I will go to and monitor the site through November and see what changes they have to the banned bat list. Hopefully they will not ban the CF3 because the DD is in love with that bat.

I hear that they are outlawing Howard ... too many of his hitting students are exceeding the maximum allowable launch speed off of their bats ... :D

BTW Howard .. at the Queen of Diamonds last weekend Allison hit a rocket back to the pitcher that struck her in the shin and rebounded all the way back to the visitors dugout going out of play - strangest double I have ever seen... The pitcher had to come out of the game, but thankfully had on a sliding pad and only a deep bruise. First thing Alli says to me when she came in was.. 'How'd you like that? just what Howard told me to do with the low pitch on the outside corner..."

Careful Doug she has only been here twice and Lenny the critic may get you as she is still just a causal visitor and does not come every week, so I am not making any money off her by working with her every week.

I wonder if they would be just clients since I do not see them every week and yet improve their hitting and throwing techniques or answer their questions over the phone or on Skype conference lessons. :lmao:

Maybe they are just visitors.

Glad to hear she had fun. :D

Is a Rocketech considered an aluminum bat? Can you use this bat is cold weather or should it be treated like a composite bat and used during warmer weather?

RT is aluminum and it should be used in warm weather.

I know what ASA continues to say, but the HS association band composite baseball bats, with no warning at all.

I still don't think that a lot of HS's know that.

I have put off buying any new composite bat this year.

I have brought this up before as to ASA bat standards.

If they, ASA set the standard why is it they, do not require a bat to be used that will not be damaged or could possibly become damaged in temperatures less than 50 to 60 degrees?

If the bat breaks or could be damaged or becomes defective during a game that was inspected by the umpire prior to the game and you are playing in temperatures under the 50 or 60 temperatures depending on the bat company, then who is liable? The umpire knowing the temperature is below the manufacturer warranty limit as they say it voids the warranty on the bat? Is The Ohio Athletic Officials for allowing bats to be used in temperature less than recommended by the bat companies? Is the parent or player using the bat liable as you assume responsibility for letting the under aged child use the bat?

Everyone should send ASA, NSA etc asking for an answer, as probably the third baseman, pitcher and and catcher are really the only ones at risk and the umpire and third base coach are fair game (just kidding) :D

Agree. I'd like to go out and get a new bat, but hate to drop that much money without knowing if the bat will be acceptable.

ASA has no business legislating compliance with manufacturers' warranties. ASA should only do something if there truly is a safety issue and that would be at a lower temperature than the one for the warranty. Until then, I would expect the owner of the bat is liable for anyone injured by its usage outside the manufacturer's guidelines.

Here is an explanation of the impact of cold temperatures by Steven Anderson, founder of Anderson Bat Co:

Question: Is the cold affecting the bat through some "brittle-ing" of the composite or alloy material, or is the cold making the ball harder which then affects the bat, or is it a combination? I've seen what appears to be valid arguments in both directions and never could get a straight answer.

Answer: A combination of the two. The ball gets significantly harder (and softer) with a relatively small change of temperature. If the ball is 40 degrees and hit with a bat that is 70 degrees you'd probably dent the bat. If a bat is 40 degrees and hit a ball that is 70 degrees you probably wouldn't dent the bat. The bat starts to become reactive to the cold at about 60 degrees but the change is not significant until about 45 where it starts to become affected more quickly and under 40 is very brittle. In cold weather below 40, where the bat is cold and hitting a cold ball, you can expect damage to occur.
