Great year for the Slammers and Silver Lasers. Way to represent Ohio in the most difficult tournament in the country for 12U.

Back atcha Valley Extreme Red, congrats on winning Pony's. Pretty good teams in the final rounds there, and after all you beat the #5 team in ASA nationals on your way. ;)

Great job Slammers and Silver. One question about the Cali teams ...Do they carry those numbers on their roster all year long or are they national pick ups? I would find it difficult to manage through 15 girls all season ?

SoCal teams typically have AT LEAST 15 on their regular roster. OCC Batbusters often have as many as 18. My first reaction to such rosters was "OMG what a nightmare to manage". But it may be that most girls accepted onto such prestigious teams recognize that they are getting more out of practices than they would get playing 100% for lesser teams.

I'm not so sure about the parents on this point. It's got to be hard shelling out all that money (some teams require parents to provide credit card information and just bill the travel expenses to the card without prior authorization) and seeing your DD on the bench.

Congrats Slammers and Lasers, finishing in the top 16 (but better of course) in the stomping grounds of CA is fabulous.
Great job coaches, players and extremely supportive parents !!

In response to the question regarding the large rosters that many of the So Cal teams carry, I had the opportunity to speak with some of the parents associated with these teams. They play every weekend all year - lots of "friendlies". When their team is winning the coach puts in the second string. Keeps games competetive and gives all 15-18 girls playing time!

they play all year, not just the 10/12 tourneys ohio teams play, plus they are playing each other. (slammers and lasers practiced all year for this one week) every weekend the Cali teams have similar competition. Kind of like YSU playing OSU in football. One team is really motivated and the other is not. They end up with injuries because of the intense play they have all year.

kids / families have school and vacations and other sports to contend with, 16 on a roster helps a team stay competitive even when these other activities take place for some of the team. Slammers can't afford a couple of players to say they can't make a tourney because of vacation.

it's just a different situation that we in Ohio don't have.

I understand the OSU/YSU thing initially & early on, but, all of those Cali teams seemed pretty motivated to me, really. This was their BIG EVENT of the year also, and they pulled out ALL the stops to get wins including some questionable & unsettling gamesmanship tactics at times by Ohio standards - ask the Slammers about the Lakewood Ladies in the 7th inning of their game, trying in vain to rattle the pitcher. They play year round, against VERY strong competition in their friendlies, but the war drums were beating loudly this past week ... SHOW TIME!!

We had a couple of OC teams come and congratulate us and even "thank" us (LOL ?:-?) for beating Irvine Sting. We surprised some people with that win over a "top 5 OC team", and we also soothed the palate with some satisfaction within certain "hot" & competitive OC rivalries. They love seeing their "rivals" knocked out, it is one less "emotional" game for them to get through later (to their thinking).

Now, being from "Ohio", we both certainly may have sneaked up on a few teams early on, but there were scouts from numerous teams at ALL of our games, who were taking us seriously for "down stream" match up possibilities. It was a real shark tank, full of talented teams, who work hard mentally and physically (eye opening actually ?) and take it VERY seriously. Prior to the start of things, I remember hearing about a Cali message board comment stating that based on the Slammers success back in Ohio ... that they "might" be a "middle of the road Cali rec ball team" - okee dokee, alrighty then ?... ?::) .

The Slammers had even more people (scouts) watching them, because they had the perceived best pitcher there. Heard that from many coaches from several top Cali teams who were scouting them while we were there rooting for them. Not positive, but I believe that a USC scout watched one of their games as well, not positive of that ID though. After shutting out the Lakewood Ladies in 8 innings, including a bases loaded (no outs) situation in the ITB, the Slammers were the buzz. They then played eventual champ Victory USA very tough also in a 2-0 loss. The talk at the time was that the winner of that Slammer/Victory USA game would probably win it all (staying out of "Losers" bracket).

Those two teams (Lakewood Ladies & Victory USA) were in the championship game final, and were coincidentally the Lasers' two eliminating losses in bracket play. For the Slammers to hold those two teams to 2 runs total? - there is no way to adequately describe it, had to see it, great accomplishment, believe me I know ?>:( .

There is so much talent out there. And, yes, we worked hard for TWO YEARS pointing to this tournament as the ultimate goal, among other goals. Would liked to have done better, but we met our minimal goals, including taking the field and measuring up against the likes of Lakewood Ladies and some other OC teams.

What a week, and very cool experience, especially surviving on the ledge for 4 games, until a tired Silver team hooked up with an angry Lakewood team - we would have CRUSHED them if we were fresh ... ?IMHO ((( :D ?:-? ))) ...

Pickledad:
I heard the same things you did. ?That Lakewood Ladies / Slammers matchup on Saturday late morning was the game to be at. ?It might have been standing room only at a field with a large bleacher-seating capacity. ?I don't know for sure since we tried to stay in the shade while Silver was sitting, waiting to face the loser.

BTW Slammers -- couldn't you have played just a few more innings of ITB so that Silver could have gotten a little more rest and the Lakewood Ladies could have stayed on the field out in the sun just a little longer. ? ;D LOL

As it stood, that was one very angry Lakewood team that Silver had to face in the blasting furnace of a Sacramento afternoon.
No excuses, though. ?Silver played great all week, losing in bracket play to the first and second place teams.

Those Cali teams were intense -- the rivalry between the teams that face each other all the time puts anything on OFC to shame.
I even witnessed the Lakewood fans hassle (harass, harangue . . . threaten! ?>:() a group of Slammer coaches and fans who just wanted to watch the Silver / Lakewood game for a little bit before seeking shade and air conditioning. ?Seems the Lakewood fans took exception to the Slammer fans/coaches watching the game from behind the Lakewood bench.

Thanks to those fellow Buckeyes who supported each other all weekend. ?I was never prouder to be from OHIO. ?Even that mutual support was commented on with respect by some Cali teams, Georgia teams, and the teams from the Pacific Northwest.

All in all, it was a great experience for my DD and the rest of my family. ?Had a great time -- especially that Laser "workout" in Tahoe on our day off. ?Really was a memorable experience.

Congratulations again, to the Ohio Lady Lasers SILVER and the Ohio Slammers. Ladies, you made all of us very proud.

Pickledad,
? ? Sorry to be the one to let you know this, but your identification of a USC scout would be incorrect, assuming that you are talking about the University of Southern California and not the University of South Carolina. ?As amazing as it seems, the University of Southern California does not field a varsity softball program.

Thanks SwingDr06,

I was told that by somebody next to me, either I misunderstood the team name amid the excitement & noise, or just got bad info altogether. Could possibly have been hallucinating also, it was a long hot dehydrating week . LOL, upon hearing his comment, I was indeed wondering why you just never seem to hear much about the Lady Trojan's softball program??, case solved now ... :-? :-[ ::)

Cheers!

pickledad, do you know if the Victory USA team that won this year is the old USA Athletics from last year?

#5Alive,

Someone else can answer definitively better than I, but I believe that is indeed the name of that team from years past. In fact I believe Victory USA won the ASA 10u championship in Tennessee a few years back under the name USA Athletics. I just don't have the facts straight for sure though, after hearing folks talk about it at ASA last week. There are several very good teams which have "USA" or "Athletics" in their name, and I could be confusing them. Man, are they a great team though (hitting-defense-speed-athleticism-attitude).
