ASA Rule & Code Changes 2006 Posted

Well, it seems the ASA could have used the review of a good editor before posting the changes:

Exhibit A:
"Rule 1- Designated Player (DP): The player who is initially on the line-up card in the teams batting order but in the defensive line-up."
I'm fairly certain that this should say "but NOT in the defensive line-up"; also it is the "team's batting order", not the "teams batting order".

Exhibit B (double base rule changes):
"Comments: This effects the Batter-runner on all balls hit to the outfield and there is a PLAY on the batter-runner."
First, the rule "affects" the Batter-runner, second "when" there is a PLAY

Exhibit A's omission of the word "not" raises an important substantive problem. ?My other comments simply prove that I haven't had my morning coffee and I'm cranky.

(I don't, however, want to completely discount my concern that many softball communications, including posts on OFC, contain a plethora of spelling and grammar mistakes. ?JTHeat might say these mistakes are irrelevant, but this is one of the few areas in which I [mildly] disagree with him. ?As many have pointed out, softball currently doesn't offer many professional experiences to high school or college players. ?I think we do the girls a disservice if we suggest by our own posts that spelling and proper grammar are not important in the real world.)

CGS -

I think JT would agree with me that on a forum grammatical errors tend to be more acceptable than in an "official" document. I also caught those errors, but having had my first cup of coffee and working on my third ;D, chose to set them aside for later emails to ASA.

How was your Thanksgiving?

TBM:

For the first time in my life, I spent Thanksgiving by myself. ?Family is all in St. Louis for an extended family affair, but we recently acquired a Golden Retriever pup who has intense separation anxiety. ?So boarding wasn't an option.

I have to say that spending the vacation alone has been wonderful. ?Of course it helps to know that the family would rather I be with them and it also helps to have a puppy who makes you get out for long walks on really beautiful but cold days like today. ?And last but not least, it helps when invisible man leaves the house well-stocked with some of his wonderful Thanksgiving stuffing.

Who knows, maybe some day this pup will be the mascot for one of the Buckeye Heat teams. ?Got to find some way to stay associated with softball now that DD is growing into her adulthood. ?

PS: I certainly wasn't suggesting that the Sheriff had to come out for spelling and grammar mistakes. You guys have enough on your hands.

Wasn't suggesting a visit from the Sheriff, just agreeing with you on the ASA mistakes. ;D

PS - You, the DD, the pup, and even the Invisible Man ;D are always welcome where ever we're playing.

Thanks; we'll probably take you up on that this summer. Forgot to mention the one downside of the all alone Thanksgiving and it was the cause of my crankiness this morning. Invisible Man usually has coffee waiting by the time I wake up :-/

I am sure that the grammar / editing will be cleaned up prior to placing the changes in the 2006 rulebook.

I am also sure that with some of the rule changes - IE: 18U - pitching distance 43' that the National Office wanted folks aware prior to the release of the rule books.

That's how I read it as well. ?Only 18U Gold division is going to 43' in the ASA. USSSA is going to 43' for its 18U Major division, which I believe is a division for 18U college players.

You are correct - the 43' is for Gold only in 2006. There was legislation on the floor to change it for 18A as well, but it did not pass.
