BALK?!?!

Setting the stage...

Pitcher receives the sign from the catcher, begins windup, batter lifts her hand and steps back, umpire stands and raises his hand giving time, halfway through the pitch, pitcher holds up and stops her pitch (although told many, many times never to do this to avoid a possibly injury).

Umpire immediately calls illegal pitch and a balk! The baserunners advance a base (luckily no one was on third). The field ump argues with the plate ump and sends the girls back to first and second. Plate ump insists it was a balk and moves the girls forward a base and ends the discussion. :-?

Are these new rules instituted by OHSAA now....are girls now allowed to lead off...do I need to teach my daughter how to hold a runner on base now...?

Ug, just another week or so of this torture...! :D

Wow, that's pretty bad. If he called that a balk, then he would have been also obligated to call a strike or ball had she finished her pitch.

That would be one game where I would end up paying $100. (see other thread). I would have never let that call go.

What? I don't quite understand. The umpire called time THEN called an illegal pitch AFTER he called time. How can that be. This is a $100 fine waiting to happen.

If he called time it can't be an illegal pitch as at that point the ball is dead. Only way this works is if he calls the illegal pitch first - I'd be right with Johnnies on this one.

He stated she stopped her pitch prior to his calling time. Regardless, it should be a ball and that's it, right? What if there WAS a girl on third, and he sent her home and we had tied or lost by one (we did end up losing the game by one, but this never came into play in the score). My big question is, IS THERE REALLY A BALK IN FASTPITCH?

...and sidebar, if the (baseball) pitcher does balk, doesn't the batter get first too?

And if I'm going to have to pay a $100 fine anyway....I'm getting my money's worth!

Just like there ain't no crying in baseball, there ain't no balks in softball!

In high school baseball, a balk is a dead ball. Any runners are advanced one base. As far as the batter, it is considered a "no pitch"- neither a ball or a strike and the batter stays at the plate with the same count. The pitch cannot be hit and no further action can take place.

In other baseball rules sets, a balk is a live pitch and it can be batted and put into play. The offensive team manager has the option of accepting the balk penalty (advance runners one base) or the results of the play.

Unless there's been a recent change, technically there is no balk in softball, only an illegal pitch....

No. The runners advance, but there is no pitch called at all.
